Well, when I was four, my family lived in a dry county on the Pennsylvania/Ohio border. A vote was coming up to see whether or not the county was going to stay dry. My father took me down to the local courthouse and taught me to sing "In Heaven There is No Beer". I was singing it on the courthouse steps in front of a bunch of nuns and a local television station taped it and it made the evening news. I didn't get in any trouble, but my mom didn't speak to my father for weeks.

Quote:

Dark and silent late last night
I think I might have heard the highway call
Geese in flight and dogs that bite
The signs that might be omens say I'm going, going
Gone to Carolina in my mind
Rather haunting to me as a kid. Only took me 37 years to figure out why.

I really loved this song!

I was really into Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. We drove down to Mexico in '66 and '67 and it really imprinted on me. Good times.
I was also a big fan of 'Son of a Preacher Man' by Dusty Springfield when it came out in '69. Very soulful song. Still is today.

Moond0ggie 05-28-2023 11:42am

I liked Puff the Magic Dragon & later, Secret Agent Man ,

GTOguy 05-28-2023 11:51am

Me too, Moondoggie. Me too. Also the theme from Batman. I had the 45.

When I was five or six I remember hearing Johnny Cash’s Live at Folsom Prison album at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house. I liked it so they got me the record for Christmas…again, I was five or six. My earliest memory of that was my favorite song being Boy Named Sue. My parents were not amused I learned later.

According to my parents I sung along with this -

Lucky for me at that age it was only one word

Well you remember wrong. Don't project your fantasies on to me I'm not your type. Trust me.

By the way, you absolutely suck at insults. I mean like really bad. I'd guess a 5 year old could send you packing.

Try to remember things your wife has said to you and use those.

Remember Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts? That was a fun tune when I was 12.

Frankie the Fink 06-01-2023 5:57am

Guess I'm REALLY old:

"Big Rock Candy Mountain" the Burl Ives version is just fine.
"The Good Ship Lollipop" the Shirley Temple rendition works for me.

RMVette 06-01-2023 6:58am

This has always brought back childhood memories for me...no lyrics but I knew Christmas was on the way when I heard this.

About age 7, or 8, I had a neighborhood buddy who got the Elvis bug.
Dood had every vinyl Elvis did, many of those songs still ring in my ears, as he played them non-stop for hours at his house.

By age 10, I could sing you any song Elvis released.
