Caitlin's overseas address...

Update: I'm sending out another package, so I had Caitlin ask more of her friends/coworkers what they might like. She gave me a few more ideas. I updated post #22 and added her friend's requests, in case anyone is looking for more ideas.

Several people expressed that they would like my daughter's address, once she was deployed.

I'm happy to report that she got to Afghanistan safely. Got stuck in Kyrgyzstan for a bit, but bummed a ride on a C-17 and finally made it. :) She's busy working and making friends already. :D

Rather than post her address publicly, I'll send it out by PM. If you would like it, just let me know or shoot me a PM.

If you're planning to mail stuff, know that it is very much appreciated. Very much appreciated. Whatever she receives, I know she will also share with her fellow Airman. Unfortunately, not everyone over there has such wonderful and loving support as this.

Keep in mind that there are prohibited items that cannot be sent. This is a pretty good site highlighting the basics. I think there's a more comprehensive list on the USPS site.

Thanks, everyone! :grouphug:

Please PM me her address at your earliest convenience. I have a bunch of APO boxes here to use.

Manas AFB in Kyrghystan. I remember that place well *funny* Another thing you can do for her is to go to a FB page titled Huddle Up For Heroes. A 12y/o young man runs it (while home schooled) and is doing a small tour with his mom to sell his "hero Bands," show his support for the troops, and wot-not (aspiring Marine I might add) to make money for care packages. I'm sure he would like to know this address, too, and his name is Christopher. His fan base has grown by the thousands IIRC in a few short months, too.

He will take any donations you wish to send and I'm positive he, along with his mom, does put it all toward the care packages.

No pork or porn ? What kind of list is this ! :toetap: I'll take the addy if you can give me some kind of idea WTF to send. Something local maybe?

DJ_Critterus 11-20-2012 8:37pm

When i was down range (PRE-TVB time) CF and quite a few of the mods there had a whole section of my office loaded with care packages from floor to ceiling. There were so many that I had trouble giving them away to some of the civilians, too. Tis a good feeling to know people back home care.

Also, if you send her anything, the small travel size bottles of soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc... are like gold at the weekly bazaar. We used to trade them for DVD's, souvenirs, and most importantly..... INTEL!

Truck Guy 11-20-2012 8:43pm

A Christmas care package is in the works. :seasix:

What can she use?

You missed alcohol. And from the pics I have seen no damn trees.

How the hell do you have a war with no booze, playmates on the wall, and hookers (I love you long time GI). I think I like my vacation in SEA a lot better than this.

If you are send Christmas decorations try to get the package off by TG. Some I have sent over in the past took as long as 2 weeks. Some things I have sent in the past are any kind of goodies (chocolate as long as the temp is lower), hot chocolate, hand warmers, decorations for their living spaces, board games, and DVDs.

I started shopping today and will have the package in the mail by Monday. Something else, try to make up small packages they can open Christmas morning. And don't forget to put a Christmas card in the box. I promise you this will give you a really warm fuzzy on Christmas morning.

mrvette 11-20-2012 9:05pm

So we send a burger looking gig made of pork BBQ in a sealed sammich bag, what they going to DO?? pull the package apart, and unseal the sammich to see if it's pork or beef or chicken?? WTF??

Booze? a bottle of water with Gin in it??

and yes, I will comply and work with Linda to get something there on time.....so forward on the addy...please....:seasix::hurray:

I just shocked at the silliness of it all....PC gone to hell.....

sorry, hate making it political and all, so no comments needed on that score....:sadangel:

I wouldn't worry so much about the DVDs as they are easy to get there and the boot leg copies are usually a damn good quality these days. Toiletries and batteries are always welcomed. Be care ful sending hand wramers as I did see some issues with them when I was there. Something happened and they were activated int he box. Not sure what all occured but the CDR was not happy.

That would be nice to know as I have a crapload of hand warmers I could send. Wife bought a Costco box of them.

NEED-A-VETTE 11-20-2012 9:28pm

I can tell you a few things she likes, in terms of snacks. She's a big (raw) fruits and veggies kid, but that kind of stuff isn't practical. Here's a list of snacks (that she likes) that are relatively inexpensive and will probably travel well...
  • Salt and vinegar chips (Pringles may travel best)
  • Goldfish crackers
  • Slim Jim's (I don't think there is any pork in those)
  • S'mores pop tarts
  • Ramen noodles (all but the shrimp flavored)
  • Cookies (not real picky on type)
  • Cheez-its
  • Strawberry fig newtons
  • Fruit Rollups or fruit snacks
  • Apple and cinnamon Quaker instant oatmeal
  • Cinnamon Toast crunch cereal
  • Those cheese and cracker packs with the spreadable cheese and the little red stick
  • She absolutely loves black olives. However, even though those are relatively inexpensive, I think the weight factor probably makes them impractical to mail.
  • I don't think that chocolate will travel well because it will melt. However, she does like plain M&Ms and those should be ok.
  • She loves to make crazy stuff with colored duct tape. (They have some pretty crazy colors.) I once recieved a neon pink wallet...made from duct tape.
  • She likes to play video games, so if anyone has any gamer magazines laying around, she could read those.
  • She sits down with her nieces and nephews and colors in coloring books. So, she'd probably enjoy those as a time killer.
  • She likes sudoku. Any type of time waster like that would be good.

There are lots of sites that have other great ideas, as well. Unfortunately, she hasn't been there long enough to express to me anything that she needs or forgot.

I hope that gives a few ideas. I'm heading to the store later on. I'll add to the list if it jogs my memory on anything else.

Honestly, though, she'll appreciate anything that you guys send.

11/20/2012 - Edit to add to list:
  • She's a tea drinker. Either regular, plain, black tea or the Tazo Zen Green tea is what she usually drinks. (Tazo is the brand. It's in an off white box with a green pic on the front. It says Zen in the front.)

11/22/2012 - Edited again
  • Beef jerky (already me mentioned below by DJ)
  • Sunflower seeds (especially the jumbo kind. Idk wtf that means)
  • Popcorn
  • Candy (pretty much any kind, especially sour candy)
  • Easy Mac Microwavable mac n' cheese (she said they go through a lot of this)
  • Pistachios
  • The flavored mixes for individual bottles of water (any flavor, including sugar free)
  • Mio (flavoring for water)

12/06/2012 - Edited again...had her ask her friends what they might like, as well.
  • Fun Dip (candy)
  • Sour Punch Straws (candy)
  • Pickles (not sure if this will be very easy to send)
  • Crackers (such as ritz)
  • Spray cheese
  • Any time killer games/puzzles/etc.

She thinks I'm asking for my own purposes...to just send care packages myself. She has no idea what is going on here.

LilRedCorvette 11-20-2012 9:35pm

^ Thanks for the ideas...this will help immensely...

Make sure you put plenty of packing stuff in the box so they don't accidently rip open and activate.

I'll put together a list of the no-go items for you all over the next day along with a list of what I (we) appreciated the most. I also have a few friends who are down range again and they can give me some ideas of what's really needed this time around. It'll jsut take time since they are actually working :funny:

Inquiries have already been sent. I expect an answer maybe within the next 12 hours.

Chocolate does OK at this time of year.

I have seen numerous requests for flavored creamer, depending on where the FPO is the PX may not have a good variety of bath items.

If you send anything in a can either make sure it has a pull top or try to remember to include a can opener. The biggest thanks I ever got was for a stinking can opener. :hurray:

If you send anything that could leak make sure you put it in a baggie. And definately use the USPS flat rate boxes if you can. The PO can provide a list of what you can't mail.

VatorMan 11-20-2012 9:45pm

That whole list is good to go. It's pretty much cold over there now, so chocolate will be fine. Hell, we got it in the summer and it wasn't that bad....just threw it in the 'fridge before we opened it. Slim Jims do have some pork in them, but they are O.K. to send. Vienna Sausage...I'm not sure.

And why the hell did they say no pork? Did they go on double secret PC or something now?

Also, cigars! Cigars were currency over there for me and also a great stress reliever. A lot of the bigger FOBs and Air Bases have weekly cigar club meetings open to all ranks.

Send the travel size stuff for soaps, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, etc... i guarantee the units are loaded with this stuff already, but they can and do trade it to the locals for stuff to include intel.

Yeah, Gene...when my BIL was first deployed to Iraq about 4-5 years ago (his first out of three deployments...Iraq X 2 and Afghanistan X 1), I was surprised at the list. Obviously, some things don't mail well, but the restriction on other things was just

Here's what I got from a friend who's deployed over there right now

Quote:

individual drink packs of various flavours (the DFACs have plenty of lemonade pks already); the MiO Drink squeeze are a big hit; Jerky, all flavours always a hit; Soft Toilet Paper; Puffs Plus lotion tissues; carmex; small tubes of hand lotions (unscented preferred); pkgs of handiwipes (any brand)-we use them for dusting, cleaning, hands, face etc; nuts (canned, flavored, packaged (sunflower, almond, peanut, cashews-big hit, etc); small individual chips; sweet-n-low packs; coffeemate powder creamer (any flavor). etc. Its cool enough now to include some chocolate. M&Ms or the halloween small packs; gum; etc etc.
The soft poo-paper is really really nice to have over there. The army issued sand paper gets to be a bit rough on ya after a while.

And did anybody else read that part about the handiwipes like he meant it for cleaning his nuts, too?

I'm overwhelmed with everyone's generosity and responses. That's all I can say without tearing up even more.

Well, since she's in the medical field here's something to improve morale:

Put out three containers with all the free condoms. Label them S,M, and L. Of course they are all the same. Watch as all the "L" ones run out.

She can also do what I did. i wanted a lollipop for not screaming some great profanities after a cortizone shot in the shoulder. Well, the PA didn't have any and told me to pretend there was one on the end of a tongue depressor. I taped an unopened condom too it. She laughed so hard she made a few extra and I gave two of them to our battalion Chaplain. He was a little upset a couple hours later when he realized what I gave him that he had on display in his office. :D He even told the XO and the Battalion Commander (and all the staff and company commanders) about it in the morning Battle Update Brief the next morning as part of his brief. That back fired and the BN CDR damn near fell out of his chair laughing.

If cigars are currency (I'll send some fuentes), this is gold (send this too)

She has some pretty funny stories. Mostly from days when she switches off and rides as an EMT.

She said they had to pick up some guy that called in his own suicide attempt. They got there and discovered he had cut the shit out of the topside of his forearm with a pair of dull scissors. Pretty painful.

When they got him in the back of the ambulance, he started to get combative, so they had to strap him down. At the hospital, the first thing they did was to begin a sedative because he was so unruly. She said, after having cut himself up with dull scissors, he cried like a bitch at the sight of the needle...and promised he'd be good.

She said she walked out of the room when he started getting mouthy with the physician on duty...who happened to be a Colonel.

I was in charge of the S-6 (communications) shop for the battalion running FOB Fenty in '08-'09 in Afghanistan. My bubbas were smart and had a 4TB server in their B-hut (their quarters). I got wind that they were downloading as much pron as possible to break the record for the most porn in country on file. Yeah, I had to be the asshole along with my NCOIC and stand over their shoulders as we watched them do an NSA standard BC-WIPE of the entire server. They got lucky that I found out first because if the chain of command had found out they would have all lost rank, money, time, etc... and I would have gotten my ass chewed hard, too. And to think, shit rolls down hill.... they would have had a rough life if that happened.

Sad though, they had some really good "adult training films," too.

Ask about poker chips. I have 4 boxes that have never been used.

Just an update, the first box I sent included a 12-pack of beef ramen noodles, a 4-pack of Easy Mac, and 6 bags of M&Ms (varying flavors - milk & dark chocolate, mint, peanut, peanut butter, etc).

The second box has 2 boxes of strawberry Newtons, a huge box of Christmas themed Goldfish crackers, another 4-pack of Easy Mac, and 2 more bags of M&Ms (raspberry).

I've got another one I'll send out in a bit (want to stagger them out somewhat) that has 2 boxes of fruit rolls ups, a box of s'mores pop tarts, a 12-pack of chicken ramen noodles, and 5 more bags of M&Ms (2 sweet/salty snack type and 3 almond).

Caitlin is going to get me a list of all the names of the senders of the packages she has received so far. Her coworkers and roommates love her.

I was at WW earlier getting stuff to make a cake and walked past the small appliance aisle and I had a thought, no real pain involved. Maybe they would like to have a waffle maker or a griddle to make pancakes. Ask Caitlin if they would be interested in either one. Obviously I am not sending butter but the pancake/waffle mix and syrup would be a no-brainer.

One advantage to the griddle would be that they could make choc. chip pancakes. Yummmmm! :D

Let me know and if they would like either I will get it off after Christmas.

Thanks, Cindy and everyone else. I'm sure that Brad would appreciate some care packages as well. I have not heard from him in a week. The last word I had was that he was still in New Mexico doing pre-deployment training. It's my understanding that they are supposed to be in country just before Christmas, so it's possible that they are intransit. Once I have an address I will let y'all know.

Thanks again for thinking of my son as well.

Godspeed to Caitlin, Sandy.
