The hospital rule is you must have three years of nursing experience to get into the CCU floor, they waived for her due to she did her college credits there. She often takes a 4th 12-hour shift each week, she gets OT for the entire fourth shift, which helps fund her purse collection. |

God bless our nurses! |
I'm sure in this amount of time, she's seen people die in the hospital, which has to weigh on people after a while. I can't imagine what a rush it would be to know you SAVED a life, right then and there.

She has lost some patients over her first two years. One was very difficult, as was admitted without life-threatening conditions, took a turn for the worse, died in front of her when the code was unsuccessful. This really wore on her, she cried for a few days, sleep was difficult. Patient was younger, had 20-something daughter always at her bedside, daughter was devastated. I still remember attending my wife's Nurse Pinning Ceremony when she graduated in 1989, we were dating at the time. The speaker for the ceremony was the dean for the college of nursing, and she told a story that a student once asked her was it normal to cry when a nurse loses a patient. Her reply was when you stop crying, it is time to stop being a nurse--I will never forget those words. |
