bilmem LeCoultre automatic watch

My supervisor brought in his late Dad's watch and I got some pictures today. It's a LeCoultre Automatic watch and he knows his Dad wore in back around 1953 when he was a local Policeman.

I've looked at google images until my eyes twirled but haven't come across any exactly like this one.

Unique features to this watch are the red outline for the hours remaining ( it's an auto winding so it shows 40 (hours) so it's wound tight from his late Mom wearing it while crocheting ) , the number 12 only at the top and it's 10K gold filled. At the 6:00 mark, it reads "Swiss". It would originally had an alligator band but now has a vintage Speidel flex band.

Gary is looking for a date range of manufacture and a value. It's off to the jewelers next week to "unwind" it.

Thanks
Jeff

THAT is a fairly valuable watch.

I happen to know a little bit about vintage watches, as I have owned several over the years...including LeCoultre's.

Yup, that is a Power Reserve LeCoultre Automatic from the 1950's. Appears to be a gold 10k filled model. Not an exceptionally rare model, but still collectible. They also manufactured an additional Power Reserve watch during the same era, known as the Futurematic, which are a bit more collectible than the one pictured.

LeCoultre is a Luxury brand now, back then it was probably considered fairly high end...definitely 'mid-tier' luxury. Also, the LeCoultre of the 50's was under the same corporate umbrella as Vacheron-Constantin, but I am not sure that is the case now. (Nox would know this)

As far as value, in the shape that it is in, probably $400-$500 retail. If you had it serviced and cleaned up, probably in the neighborhood of $700-$1000...$1500 TOPS maybe.

DO NOT REDIAL THAT WATCH, it will decrease its value.

Neat Watch!

Thanks. He does know enough no to redial it but thank you for saying that "outloud". That way if somebody comes across the thread later, they will know original is preferred.

Would changing the crystal decrease value?

No, that's considered a wear item (more or less). Does he have the original box?

I will check with him tomorrow. I know most original boxes with hang tags from just about anything can add 50% to the value.

I've looked on ebay too and haven't found any with the red surround on the time or just the number 12 on the dial.

It would be cool. Also, original boxes on watches from that era are pretty hard to come by...

Although to be safe, I would keep the old crystal after replacement, just in case.

I have my dadís 1948 LeCoultre. Itís in primo condition, just a beautiful dress watch. My mom gave it to him when they married. I also have a really nice futurematic.
Corne de Vache lugs, also gold.
Iíll never sell my dadís, but, the Futurematic might go for the right price...

Those Futurematic's are really neat. Those fancy lugs were pretty common with LeCoultre and Vacheron watches of the era.

LeCoultre's big claim to fame was the Memovox, which was a mechanical alarm watch. I had one, and am still pissed at myself for selling it to this day. I sold that watch along with a NOS Bulova Accutron Spaceview with a tuning fork shaped cushion case (of which I have NEVER seen another like it) to raise funds to move to the Left Coast...that was over 20 years.
