I am about 70 miles from the Santa Rosa fire here. I woke up this morning and found out about it then. We also have some smaller local fires here. Nothing threatening right where I live, except air quality. My wife is at the hospital here right now. She was called in as a volunteer to help out in the ICU. I worked my usual volunteer shift there this morning.

Two large hospitals in the area of the fire were evacuated in the middle of the night. I heard nurses transported patients in their own cars in some cases. Some of the employees in our hospital live in that area and could not get to work, so we were short handed, that's why they called my wife in to help out.

One of the hospitals that was evacuated belongs to our hospital group, so the whole chain of hospitals is on emergency alert. I never realized how inter-dependent a chain of hospitals are, both electronically and personnel wise, so, it's affected all of them.

I'm signed up for another shift in the surgery center tomorrow, we'll see how it's going then. I suspect some will be cancelled because they are elective surgeries. All but one of our anesthesiologists but one. come from the Santa Rosa area to work up here one or two days a week.

So many fires were started in the area last night, I have to wonder if we have another arsonist running around. If they catch him in my county, among the charges will be resisting arrest and assaulting an officer. The face in his mug shot will look like hamburger. You know what I mean.

My wife's cousin, who was in town with his wife and kids two weeks ago for the Bills game that we went to, have been evacuated,
They're somewhere in the Sonoma area, I'm not sure exactly where, but jeez! That sucks to have to worry about if you're gonna have a house to go back to.
We're hoping for the best for him.
I guess Buffalo isn't that bad after all after seeing all of the fun the rest of the country goes through on a regular basis.
At least the snow goes away after a while and you are left with what you had before it fell.

Glad to hear they are okay.

The larger danger for them is if they live in Santa Rosa, they live in the same county as Knooger.

When we evacuated it was at 7:00 am on a Sunday. We had about five minutes to grab what we could and leave. I wanted to leave, only three two lane roads out of my area or we were trapped. For all I knew one or more were closed.

If your relatives evacuated anywhere near this quickly, tell them to take stock of what they took and what they left behind. It tells you a lot about what's important in your life. For instance, I grabbed dog food and left about 10K worth or heirloom jewelry behind. Knowing what was important made downsizing easy. I took nothing from my garage that day. I even left a car behind even though we had two drivers. It was more important to have my wife with me in the car so I knew she was safe than to drive another car I was selling anyway. I think you see what I mean.

Have this conversation with them. It expanded my horizons thinking of all this. It's a day I will never forget.

A friend's daughter evacuated from Rohnert Park, south of Santa Rosa, yesterday. She goes to Sonoma State.

Knooger reported at the other place that his house burned to the ground.

That really sucks.

The fire was 1/2 mile away, but the sustained gas build-up inside his house ignited.

All kidding aside, that really sucks for him.

Yes, I read that, too. He did say his family was all safe and they are well insured. I understand his wife is a doctor, so this could be a busy time for her. Two or three large hospitals in Santa Rosa were evacuated, so it's having an impact on other hospitals in the area.

What really sucks is even if you have the insurance and the means to rebuild, your formerly beautiful wooded neighborhood with spectacular views is a moonscape filled with with burned trees. The smell, which can take weeks to subside is also something you never forget.

Default Still makes me nervous.....

As it stood yesterday evening, the fire closest to me is still ~3 air miles away (6 miles driving) with two roads, a freeway and a creek between the fire and the house. Nobody has asked us to evacuate or mentioned it as a possibility - as of last night it was 80 acres which is a lot of ground but not in wildfire terms.
The other two fires are further out but worse. One was 900 acres at last count and burnt 30-40 structures. That was / is about 15 minutes drive, probably 7 miles as the crow flies. Another was down in a sparsely populated valley, the Oregon House fire, which has already burnt 8200 acres. For reference, a square of 1 mile by 1 mile is 640 acres, known as a Section.
This is all last night's updates, no idea what happened overnight that hasn't made it to the local news service yet.
Nobody has any reason to think we might be in trouble over here any time soon.
Thanks for checking in at, ahem, 530
