Default First class more reasonable

Airlines are starting to realize that they can actually sell first class tickets if they put a fair price on them.

My trip to Newark next week was $411 for coach, which I paid and will get reimbursed from the client, but I personally paid an additional $450 for first class both ways.

Just booked my wife a flight to go spend a long weekend with G in SC. Coach ticket was $550, first class was $904. Who they hell wouldn't pay that "reasonable" premium to skip the security lines, not worry about overhead bin space, and get extra seat space, meals and free drinks?

I'm a big fucker, so the space is more important to me, but when first class used to be $2,000-3,000 for a flight, nobody would buy it and they gave those seats to their members (for no additional revenue).

Now...bring the prices inline, and you might actually cash in on some real additional revenue. If I could pay $800-1,000 for first class to any destination in the US, that's all I would ever pay and fly.

How tall are you? I haven't flown in probably 15 years and at just under 6', I was cramped then. If you have the funds, why not be more comfortable

I would pay more, too, to fly First Class, but only if I know I'm getting true First Class treatment and accommodations. I no longer trust airlines; they have a long history of promising what they don't deliver. It's sort of like Delta promising in-flight meals...and then handing you a brown bag when you board--soft drinks are of course $5.00 extra.

At this stage of doubt, I wouldn't pay double for First Class, maybe only a couple of hundred dollars, depending on the length of the flight. They have a lot of atonement to do before I part with any more money.

It's pretty easy to check out online what kind of aircraft/service you will get flying any particular flight. There can always be a last minute aircraft substitute but if you do some research it's pretty easy to tell what you should get

For a 2 hour flight ? Are you insane ? I've paid for first class going to Belize and Mexico. 4 hour flights and it cost me $90 a seat to upgrade. NFW am I paying double for a 2 hour flight.

I've had a unique experience because my dad worked for United Airlines and we flew a lot when I was a kid in the 60s. I estimate I flew about a half million miles before my 18th birthday, most of it in first class on coast to coast flights. I'm not a big guy, so the larger seats and legroom are not that big of a deal to me. Free drinks? How much does one drink on a five hour flight? Free movies was a thing in the 60s, but it was one movie, no selection. Chances of me even wanting to watch that movie were slim. Even if I do, I'll pay the few bucks for the earphones.

The food was far better than coach, but how much is one meal worth? It wasn't a meal I would pay hundreds of dollars for. At least a few times I did do some serious under-age drinking there, though.

I think in today's world, I would be willing to pay about a 20% premium for first class, and it would have to be a long flight to make that worth it.

Definitely taking in everyone's input for sure.

At my size, coach by it's very definition is a prison camp, so when you factor in the other benefits, you can see why I gravitate toward it. To each their own, but I'd still pay $800-1,000 all day long for a flight if it's first class both ways. And for me, the trip TO the client, I don't enjoy the free drinks. Those are only for the flight home.

I need space. I've actually had my knee gashed by a seat back while I was sleeping on a plane in a coach seat when the person in front of me reclined. I bled all over the floor. It was gnarly. Should have sued.

If I got hired, I'd negotiate first class for travel. Otherwise you can pay me to drive.

Domestic First class has very rarely been 2-3K unless buying at the last minute.

Depending on what airline you like to fly look into getting a Credit card that get you thier miles PLUS Airline status miles and priority seating/service.

You can use those miles or if you get high enough status to fly domestic first class cheaply.

It has actually become easier/cheaper to get First Class or Business Class tickets if you are willing to pay for them. The airlines used to give any unsold first class seats to members of their FF program as upgrades. Then they realized that they could sell those at a discount and still come out ahead. Some airlines even auction upgrades right up to flight time.

Haven't had to fly in a couple years, but I've flown first class several times. Never had to pay anywhere near double. That's just outrageous!!!

6'. I have to fly economy/coach for work regardless...but even for personal travel I do the same. $200 an hour more to fly very slightly more comfortably just isn't worth it to me.

I'm 6'5" and usually when I get on a plane a flight attendant will aproach me and request that I sit in a door isle, which has more leg room.
It's weird... Like they know that I can kick ass and take prisoners.
For a four hour flight I'll be damned if I pay that kind of coin for that upgrade. For free ??? I'd sit there in a heart beat.
Like Kermudgen said though. The food in coach is better than first class . Free drinks in 1st class is definitely nice though.

I kind of actually enjoy flying shitty coach. No need to shower, shave, or brush my teeth that day. I just always have to remember to NOT wash the gym clothes I've been working out in the past few days so they are ready for the big trip.

I won't fly coach anymore, First Class is worth the extra cost. So is the extra 60 bucks to sit in the club/lounge instead of the Terminal....especially if you have a lengthy layover.

A few years ago, I paid for the club membership for 3 years. Well worth the price.
