SOS, my favorite, for as long as I can remember. Mom used to make from scratch, and I still do to this day, my twin G-daughters (11) love it.

Package of dried chipped beef, flour, milk, onions, butter, white toast almost burnt, season to taste.

Soak the dried beef just a little bit, lots-o-salt. Saute some chopped onions in the butter, add some flour to make a dough ball, then slowly pour in the milk just a little at a time stirring constantly. The dough ball will eventually turn into a paste, and adding more milk until it finally gets to a gravy consistency. Add the beef, chipped, and heat until almost to a boil, stirring constantly, but don't let it boil, the milk will separate, you won't like it.

Single serving, pour over 2 or 3 (mine) or 4 pieces of really dark toast, enjoy with your favorite cup of joe.

Naturally, I don't eat this everyday for breakfast, on average, once a week. There are decent already made heat and serve packets available if you're in a hurry and don't want to make a mess, Bob Evans' comes to mind.

Good stuff. :seasix: I first had SOS in a USAF chow hall. It was actually pretty good. I ate it plenty of times I will say, though, my sisters biscuits and brown gravy will beat the pants off of it. She's a true southern lady and makes plenty of meals/dishes from scratch.

I like SOS but I never thought of it as breakfast food. we always had it for dinner when I was a kid, and the wife and I still do.

I was never a big breakfast eater. More of a coffee and toast or donut person.

What memories. I haven't even thought about SOS since my dad died 45 years ago. It was a favorite of his and I learned to love it as well. I think I'll whip some up this weekend.

I always liked it best with ground beef, next to a couple of eggs over medium, and hash browns. I think my cholesterol just went up.

.......I thought you had it everyday Norm? :D

My Mom used to make something similar for dinner, but we never used that name, shit on a shingle. And we can't get dried chipped beef up here I don't think. :bilmem:

The best chipped beef actually comes in a jar, sorta like beef jerky and you don't even need to soak it as long as you don't add any additional salt. Haven't made it in years and years though. If I'm going that route, I'll just do biscuits and sausage or bacon gravy, something I always have ingredients on hand.

Ive had it many times, beginning in elementary school, I always thought it was just fine. When I became a Marine we had it sometimes and I thought it was still just fine. Other guys used to piss and moan about it but it was really not bad at all.

Just consumed this about 15 minutes ago, took the less messy route, the heat and serve, but nevertheless..................ummmmmmm.

I don't know what that is but it looks very southern

It's not really so much southern as military. SOS (shit on a shingle) aka chipped beef on toast is a military staple. My dad had it while he was in the Army, and liked it so my mom would make it from time to time. All us kids liked it. Southern is biscuits and gravy, which is awesome. Chipped beef on toast is also great "poor" food. It's super cheap to make, high calorie enough to get you to the next meal without any problem, and pretty tasty for just a few ingredients. You don't need onions necessarily, just butter, flour, milk, chipped beef, bread, and plenty of black pepper. They've been serving SOS in the military for probably 100 years at least.

One of my favorite meals. Horrible for you, but excellent dinner...or breakfast!
