Just installed a Gen 2 which we received as a gift.
Seems terrific and is great being able to check and set temperature when over 100 miles away. So far I have one complaint that I am talking to them about.

So who else has one and what do you think about it? ..

I have one and like it. Can't tell if it has saved me any money though...

Yeah, if it does great,it seems that the ability to turn on/off and re set when I am 100+ miles away will be worth it alone.

Our Nest is in the living room. If we're not in the living room, it may think we're away, so it will go into Away mode. When that happens, from anywhere in the house, I can tell it that we're actually home, assuming I have my phone, iPad or laptop with me. :)

Great. Now your A-hole neighbor's 14 year old can hack your stat and set the temps at either 90 or 40 from the comfort of his parent's bathroom while watching Russian pron and stroking himself with his other hand.

I don't think I have ever been away from home and wished that I had the ability to check and/or change the temperature of my house.

Why would one want such a device, aside from the novelty factor?

Tech Insight: Hacking The Nest Thermostat (http://www.darkreading.com/vulnerabilities---threats/insider-threats/tech-insight-hacking-the-nest-thermostat/d/d-id/1298036)

"The three researchers demonstrated the ease with which a Nest thermostat can be compromised if an attacker has physical access to the device. In less than 15 seconds, an attacker can remove the Nest from its mount, plug in a micro USB cable, and backdoor the device without the owner knowing anything has changed. The compromised Nest can then be used to spy on its owner, attack other devices on the network, steal wireless network credentials, and more."

Yep. Good Luck with that. And Good Luck with getting on my network.

But beyond that, if some state country decides to attack my Nest at the "SCADA" level of function, they will be able to destroy all my centrifuges.

Well lets see......ok here's a good one....at least I think it is....tell me what you think.
I am up north and the shore house has been set on...lets say 55 degrees in the winter.....the news is predicting a storm, frigid cold and strong winds at the beach....gee,maybe I could up the temperature to 65 to make sure the house is warmer.
Or well here's a good one too....it's 7PM and we are leaving the house up north to go to the shore. It's again winter and very cold....well when we are in the car one hour away my wife can access and raise the house temperature to 70 degrees so when we get there the house in warm......what do you think?
Could be more than a novelty I think.

Since I picked up this programmable thermostat off ebay a few years ago for a buck, I think the payoff on the initial purchase of a nest alone would be awhile.

I have one for my up and downstairs units. Love them both and pretty sure they have saved me money. I also have the nest cameras all around the house so one app and I can control everything.

Yup. Cheap and effective. That's what I'm thinking. If you have a vacation home and tend to arrive at 7pm on Fridays, it would probably take a lot of Fridays to offset a simple programmable t-stat and have it bump the temp up a few degrees at 5pm on Friday. I think I last changed the program on my thermostat 10+ years ago. Not saying novelty is a bad thing though.

CeeFour, I have that exact thermostat. It works fine.

When we replace my downstairs Ac hopefully this weekend, I will require they install an ecobee with remote sensors in the kitchen and master bedroom...I will do upstairs when that unit requires replacement.

The one feature the ecobee 3 doesn't have is I want my two units to talk to each other and coordinate their approach to cooling the house. The nest can't do remote sensors nor can it coordinate with other thermostats.

I have had a NEST since they came out. As said, if the thermostat is in a location people don't walk by, it will stay in away mode. Not an issue in my house so it has been perfect.

Don't mean to ...beat a dead horse but I wonder why it is simpler to use the app on your cell phone then to actually use the thermostat.

For me, if I get home early or am headed home early I can kick on both units and start cooking the house before I get there....especially the upstairs unit since its out is sight out of mind.
