Flights Between US and Istanbul Suspended After Terrorist Attack

In the wake of a terrorist attack that left at least 28 dead and 60 injured at Ataturk airport, all scheduled flights between the United States and Istanbul have been temporarily suspended while officials sort out the incident in Turkey, a senior U.S. official told ABC News today.

The FAA also confirmed to ABC News it has put in place a ground stop for any U.S. flights departing for Istanbul and any flights leaving Istanbul for the U.S.

An official told Turkish state broadcaster TRT that two attackers opened fire with machine guns and detonated suicide belts outside the international terminal before passing the first security checkpoint. Later the governor of Istanbul said that there were three suicide attackers.

There are currently 10 airborne flights inbound to U.S. destinations from Istanbul, all Turkish Airlines flights. U.S. officials are in the process of determining exactly how to handle them, but it is expected that those planes will be isolated once they land and then searched, according to the senior U.S. official. Only then will passengers and luggage be allowed near the airport terminals.

The Ataturk airport in Istanbul, like many across the Middle East, has a layer of security at the terminal entrance, including X-rays that scan check-in and carry-on bags, and metal detectors that scan passengers. Ataturk is the 11th largest international airport, with nearly 62 million passengers traveling through it in 2015, according to Airports Council International, an industry airport group that acts as the voice of the world's airports and the communities they serve.

Today's attack comes three months after deadly coordinated bombs were detonated at an international airport in Brussels. Brussels Airport CEO Arnaud Feist expressed his shock about the Istanbul attack on Twitter Tuesday evening.

This is the fifth major attack on Turkey's biggest city this year -- earlier this month, a car bomb attack on a police bus has killed seven officers and four civilians in central Istanbul.

ABC News' Alexander Marquardt, Jon Williams, John Gallagher, Whitney Lloyd, Erin Dooley, Jeff Cook and Casey Decker contributed to this report.

Funny how the Trump Doctrine is already being invoked, and he hasn't even won yet.

Our government should not ever, ever wait to see what is going on. It is contrary to our newly formed doctrine of "Don't worry about the mule being blind, go ahead and load the wagon."

It maybe take a month or two to set up the subs, but 4 of the could easy wipe out ALL electric power in ALL of islam, without electric power you can't run a water system, so all the mozzies line up at the river bank or oasis and fight it out among themselves....all 1.6 billion of them, without electric power they can't access the .net so no .com of any kind, really, means no banking, so they can't finance the invading armies.......so WE can take the $$$$ from their accounts and pay off our national debt.....they have no use for the $$$ they can't access, now, DO they???

Essentially WE would not be killing them, they commit mass suicide that we enabled them to do.....they be back to may 200 years ago type life.....

can't run a refinery/pump oil without electric power.....without water the farms, if any, DIE.....

war over in 6 weeks after the strike....maybe sooner....

after that, we blast the mosques in Saudi, and Iran, and fly over with a forest fighter plane spraying pig grease/guts all over the sites.....just for shits and giggles......:kick:

America has failed in confronting these animals since the 1970's. Our policy of Moderated response has only emboldened these animals.

It's time to go after anyone and everyone that is part of these nut cases network. Family, Friends Neighbors, Teachers, Imams, Trainers, financiers and other and hunt them down and kill them in messy and public ways.
We do not have a "Radical Islam" problem. We have a Islam problem. These radicals cannot and could not exist with out the overt and covert support of their fellow Muslims. It's time to bring the war to them.

Kill them in enough number to make them crawl back under thier rocks or reform.

I think we've pretty much "figured out what the hell is going on."

It's having the conviction to do what's necessary to stop it is where we seem to be falling short.

any gathering of people, particularly people who are not paying attention and who are disarmed, is a target to them.

what's happening monday? fireworks. and people looking up, and not around, loud noises (easily mixed in with gun fire or explosions).

think i'll stay home.

Plus the additional factor of darkness...

imagine a minivan of 3-4 guys rolling down Independence Ave in DC as the fireworks are going off. 100,000+ people walking along the streets, heading back to various Metro stations when the show is done. you almost could not miss.

or a long line waiting to get into a sports event.

the list is endless....

Time to open up some WWII style kick ass on them.

Muslim voter registration up 300,000 since 2012
More than a quarter million Muslims have become registered voters since the last presidential election, a Muslim group reported on Tuesday.

In June there were 824,000 registered Muslim voters. That number represents a significant bump from the 500,000 voters the group accounted for in 2012.

The FBI investigated the Orlando shooter for 10 months beginning in 2013
putting him under surveillance, recording his calls and using confidential informants to gauge whether he had been radicalized after the suspect talked at work about his connections with al-Qaeda and dying as a martyr.

Omar Mateen, who was killed in a shootout with police on Sunday morning, was placed on a terrorism watch list and interviewed twice before the probe was closed in March 2014.

Several months later, in July 2014, Mateen surfaced again in another investigation into the first American to die as a suicide bomber in Syria, a fellow Floridian. And, again, investigators were instructed to move on.
