Took the S&W M&P15 to the gun club today and was pretty impressed with it.
Below is the rifle range. You can see the target backstops at 25, 50 and 100 yards. The 200 yard target hangers are behind the "rifle range" sign.

Here's that target I shot 35 rounds into at 50 yards. I was shooting from a bench resting my elbows on the bench itself. ( I flung the two far left rounds out of the circle as I was getting used to this rifle ) I did not use a bench mounted forearm rest. Trigger was a bit heavy but very crisp ( I'm spoiled as I'm comparing it to my $1300 Bushmaster DCM competition AR-15 )

Minute of center mass. Perfect.

For a weapon that sells for $650 brand new, I was mighty impressed with how well it shot.

My comment was not a dig; the gun is accurate enough for serious social purposes, and therefore : perfect.:seasix:

I have four Aero Precision lowers coming in and I'm planning my first build now. I have been researching triggers and will probably go with the Larue MBT-2S for $125. It seems like a good upgrade.

If you are new to building and shooting the AR platform you might be well served starting out using a mil-spec FCG since many lower parts kits include them anyway. They are the least expensive and perhaps the most robust option and mastering that less than ideal pull will increase your appreciation of a better unit if you still feel the need to go there after you shoot it some.

Nice group. :seasix:
If you are doing that well on elbows, see what it'll do parking it on a sandbag.

I was already to build an AR up and was discussing my plans with my friend John ( GREAT shooter, earned Presidential 100 and won the Nathan Hale Award at Camp Perry -- that's high scoring civilian )

He suggested purchasing the Bushmaster DCM model as it had everything already done to it right out of the box. That was a good 10 years ago and there are plenty of good manufacturers of AR parts out there now.

I'll try it prone next. If the SHTF, I won't be carrying sandbags with me

I like your choice of SHTF gear. No frills, no glass, no batteries required. Put a sling on it and spend the money saved on ammunition.

I texted a friend of mine ( retired Army Ranger ) and asked what he suggested. Based on his recommendation, I picked up a sling from ebay.

All those years of NRA High Power Competition using iron sights really paid off. We shot at 200 yards. For the 300 yard and 600 yard portion, we used NRA approved reduced size targets. It gave you everything except the actual long distance bullet drop.

Shooting at 200 yards at the simulated 600 yard target, the "X" ring is 1-1/8" in diameter. Try that prone with iron sights ( I was using a M1 garand with match sights )

I shot highpower comp for years with my 1903 Springfield. I totally agree all those years of iron sights pay off. At age 70, I can still fill the bull at 100yds but I feel the eye strain afterward. My BIL range buddy uses all the latest benchrests , $copes and goodies he won't have if TSHTF.....always fun no matter what you use.
