Off-Duty LAPD Lieutenant Shoots 2 Alleged Burglars at San Gabriel Home; 1 Critically Injured | KTLA (http://ktla.com/2016/03/15/2-people-injured-while-allegedly-attempting-to-burglarize-off-duty-lapd-officers-san-gabriel-home-police/)
Cliffs: A robbery with a happy ending.
An off-duty LAPD lieutenant shot two alleged burglars, critically injuring one, during a break-in at his San Gabriel home on Tuesday, and two additional people have since been detained.
He confronted two alleged burglars inside the house, who then fled through a kitchen window, which was also the initial point of entry, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
"As the homeowner stood near the window, he saw one of the suspects reach for his waistband and turn towards him. Fearing the suspect had armed himself and was going to seriously hurt or kill the homeowner, an officer-involved shooting subsequently occurred," the release stated.
The lieutenant shot one suspect in the leg and the other in the leg and stomach, said Lt. Eddie Fernandez with the Sheriff's department.
One injured suspect was transported to the hospital by two alleged accomplices, and all three were detained.
The lieutenant and a neighbor -- who is a retired doctor -- treated the second injured person at the scene until officials arrived.
Both were hospitalized, where one was listed in critical condition and the other was stable, Fernandez said.
The identities of those injured and detained were not yet known, but they were believed to be juveniles, he added.
It was also not known if any items had been taken from the home or if the alleged burglars were armed.
No suspect weapon was recovered, the release stated.
The lieutenant, who was not injured, was a 29-year veteran of the police force who works at the department's Pacific Division, LAPD's Meghan Aguilar said.
All shootings involving officers -- whether on or off-duty --- are reviewed by the chief of police, she added.
The lieutenant was believed to have fired two to three rounds from a gun he owned personally and did not use for work purposes, Fernandez said.
The lieutenant then opened fire outside his home, shooting one suspect in the leg and the other in the leg and stomach, said Lt. Eddie Fernandez with the Sheriff's department.
