Algebra is a socialist plot. Why do we all have to solve for X? Let X work out his own problems. The most memorable thing X has ever done is vote for Bernie.

Years ago I was asked to speak at a local Upper School graduation. I was one of 5 speakers who was to give about 5-10 minutes of remarks. The speaker before me retracked some of the miseries of being a High School student and ended by saying, "And remember...there is no such thing as Algebra in real life."

I agree that's true about basic math. I don't think it's true about Algebra.

Having just about finished the above math class, I have realized that I have not needed radical expressions or the quadratic formula in my life... ever.

That is happening everywhere Common Core "math" is being taught. There will be no Engineering or Physics majors by the time all these kids graduate because they will have no clue what a proper equation or formula looks like! This may be the final straw which breaks the back of the US industrial empire... we are preparing an entire generation to fail in the real world.

In its most general form, algebra is the study of mathematical symbols and the rules for manipulating these symbols; it is a unifying thread of almost all of mathematics. As such, it includes everything from elementary equation solving to the study of abstractions such as groups, rings, and fields.

If we do not introduce our children to Algebra we will not find those with the gift to move into science an technology.

Just like not teaching Art, Gym, Phys Ed, Literature and dozens of other gateway disciplines.

The educational system is about teaching people the discipline of Learning and then the basics for applying that learning.

Those who then Use those skills advance. The rest work for them.
