View Full Version : Thinking about changing the name of our ice cream business...
Ka'uilani Cones just doesn't roll off the tongue easily in Cow Hampshire.
Got any suggestions? :bigears:
Our core business is of course, ice cream. Milkshakes and sundaes are part of it too, of course. We are also equipped to do burgers, dogs, fries and sammiches.
So, what are some suggestions? :bigears:
Green Mountain ice cream
Live free ice cream
Live free cones
Ben and Jerry's :slap: oh, right, already taken.

Henry,
I would recommend you pursue a more rigorous process to name your company. You are creating a trademark and brand that will become very valuable - and disastrous to change if you get it wrong. (for example, if you don't do a trademark search and end up in court for infringement.)
You will be putting a lot of time, energy and work into making your brand represent the business. The name should communicate the value of the business, be memorable and simple. You'll want to check and see if the URL is available too.
Brainstorming is a good start. But only part of the process.
Once you have a list of possibilities, you'll want to do a trademark search TESS -- Error (http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=4810:h8dedw.1.1) to see if anyone owns the name (if they do, and it's a similar kind of business - scratch it off your list).
Don't try to be too clever or make obscure puns. Think about the connotation of the words and what you want to communicate (fun? refreshing? rich? old fashioned? Home made? ????)
There is a food truck business that serves gourmet hotdogs called "The Evil Wiener" - http://www.foodtrailersaustin.com/wp-content/uploads/cache/images/2016/04/TheEvilWiener_Truck/TheEvilWiener_Truck-2750968832.jpg
Great example of a solid brand name that has personality.

Did I get the name wrong? I can't remember shit.
Here's a few more thoughts about naming. Think about why you got into the business to begin with. Why ice cream? Is there a history in your family of making it? What images do you think of when you think of ice cream?
Get one of those huge sticky note pads and paper your walls with ideas - words and images - don't try to guess the name - just write down everything that comes to mind about ice cream.
Don't judge what comes - just write it down. The goal is to get a hundred ideas on paper. You'll sort them out after into "Good" "maybe" and "hell no"

being from hawaii, i can only assume it was named after princess ka'uilani....
coulda been worse--
kalanianaole (a highway)
liliokaulani ( the queen )
kaanapali ( near lahaina on maui )
kaaawa ( on the north shore of oahu )
maunawili (at the bottom of the pali )
humuhumunukunukuapua'a ( state fish...seriously!) .....etc.....
actually, for those saying "WTF" !!! hawaiian is relatively easy--there are NO silent
sounds, you pronounce everything exactly as it looks with one caveat-- all the
vowels are soft, EXCEPT the "O". so "A" isnt pronounced like the "A" in "PLAY",
its pronounced like the "A" in the word "FART".
therefore, phonetically speaking "kalanianaole" is simply pronounced like this-
" CAW-LAW-NEE-AH-NAH-OH-LAY".
and "humuhumunukunukuapua'a" is pronounced --
"WHO-MOO-WHO-MOO-NEW-COO-NEW-COO-AH-POO-AH-AH".
i promise im not messing around with you, this is for real.
see? not that hard once you figure it out.
and finally my vote for the new name is
lizard blizzard.

My wife's niece was born in Hawaii, thus she earned the nickname Princess Ka'iulani. We wanted to name the company Big Kahuna Cones, but there is already a Big Kahuna Catering company here. So, we came up with Ka'iulani Cones.
Pronunciation: kah-ee-uu-lah-knee

If you have to tell people how to pronounce it, it's hard to spread the word.
I stand by painting it municipal safety yellow and black and calling it the Cool Bus.
