I wanted to share this post and/or my extreme jealousy of somebody I just met last Saturday.

My wife and I needed new cell phones so, after hitting a few places we ended up in the harsh neon and fluorescent glare of Best Buy. We started talking with a sales person, who was really helpful and took the time to explain all of our options to my wife and I but, I kept noticing this one employee. He had his corporate issued blue Best Buy polo and a pair of Dockers as did everybody who worked there but, he was also wearing a backpack. It was not a school backpack like my kids use but, a serious hiking backpack. After several minutes my curiosity got the best of me and I went to talk to him.

His story is not much different than yours or mine. He gets up and goes to work and does his best to help customers, clients and his fellow workers. His daily routine can be rather mundane but, he definitely puts a great spin on working in retail. I know this sounds like nothing to be jealous of but, that is not where his story ends.

It turns out that Saturday was his last day at Best Buy. He had quit his job. No, not for another more glamorous position in the corporate world or for another $1.00 an hour in the mall. It was not anything like that. He was crossing off one of his bucket list items early in life.

He is leaving his comfy suburban life, with its retail stores, restaurants, friendly sports bars, warm beds, as well as , all of his friends and family and hiking from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest trail! Remember the backpack? Yes, hiking the entire 2650 miles with elevation changes ranging from just slightly above sea level to over 13150 feet. No hotels just a small tent and a few trail head depots to resupply and continue on. He said his journey should be complete in approximately 5 months. He is also chronicling his epic, and I am sure life changing, trek on facebook. Check out https://www.facebook.com/DextersQuest to follow his journey.

I am reminded of the times I have taken memorable journeys with friends and solo but, I always had something with a motor for those trips. I can only imagine what is in store for young Dexter but, I am sure his stories will serve as great entertainment for his family and friends for decades to come.

Cheers to you Dexter Lanning! I applaud your efforts and desire to live life to the fullest.

My only wish, well my only realistic wish because I am not going with you, is that you have a safe and spectacular 5 month hike.

An engineers son at work quit his good engineering job to hike the Appalachian trail, all the way from Georgia to Maine. 2,180 miles he picked the whole thing. It was on his list he wanted to do so he did it. Amazing, wish I had that gumption when I was younger.

Good luck to Dexter!!

don't have a 'bucket list' per se, but we have concluded that dying rich is dumb, so we're making good progress on that. :slap:
