My 4+year old HP i-7 laptop is getting a little long in the tooth, and has some old age problems that make it usable, but annoying, and the computer repair guy I showed it to recommended, either live with the annoyances or get a new one.

So, I'm thinking about this:

Amazon.com : 2016 HP Pavilion 17 Premium Laptop (Intel i7 CPU up to 3.10GHz, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB HDD, 17.3" HD+ BrightView LED-Backlit Display, DVDRW, USB 3.0, HDMI, HD Webcam, B&O Audio, Windows 10) : Computers & Accessories@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/514MfWyag2L.@@AMEPARAM@@514MfWyag2L

That's about the limit of what I want to spend. I don't do anything really intensive, just normal surfing, QuickBooks, word processing, etc. Is this a fair deal? Should I be looking at something else instead? Better price on this somewhere else?

I'd like to stay with HP, to help them recover from the damage Carly did to them.

Edit: all the computers I am looking at seem to have a new wireless adapter designation. Will this work with my current router?

I bought a MS Surface Pro 4. It is really, really nice. You can get an i7 processor if you need the horsepower. It is a little pricey, though.

Then I have no recommendations for you.

HP consumer hardware sucks money balls, IMHO. :ack:

And if I chose to go outside HP? Dell maybe?

I'd like to be under $ 700, better still at under $ 600, for something that probably won't last 5 years, if the current HP is any indicator.

Agreed. Around Christmas time my wife bought an HP, multiple problems, they finally agreed to accept return and send a replacement. She got the second one...same type of problems, said ef em and bought a Surface Pro really likes it

Add a 1 in front of those numbers for a MAC.

You can't get a 17" mac notebook anymore. :(

I won't buy one, so she uses the couch as an Etch-a-Scratch.

Edit: all the computers I am looking at seem to have a new wireless adapter designation. Will this work with my current router?Yes, it'll be fine, WiFi standards are generally backwards-compatible.
New router with old devices would be more of a concern, but routers typically have legacy broadcast modes, so that usually isn't a problem either.

I don't have a specific laptop suggestion, but I''d look at Asus before HP or Dell.

I've had really good luck with ASUS home computers, have a laptop and a desktop from them...most of my network equipment is Asus as well.

Dell has been a great work computer, my last 3 or 4 work computers have been Dell's, I did break a motherboard in one, but Dell did eventually replace it, under warranty.

My last laptop was an ASUS and it's fine. HP was OK about 5 years ago, but not now. Windows 10. This model looks like a nice one.

Nice, but a 17" screen is a hard requirement. My ex g/f had the smaller size and the keyboard was difficult to type on and the screen was too small for my taste.

The problem with a HP or Dell, is they come with preloaded crapware that you will probably never use. Not only that, it slows down your pc in the process.

An Asus or Acer are also good choices, and probably cheaper. The link that CyberCowboy posted is a good one.

ASUS has 17" versions but they are probably going to be closer to $1000. Most 17" laptops are considered to be "gaming laptops" and have better graphics and resolutions. They are fine for everyday use though.

ASUS would be my first pick for a commodity laptop. My next laptop will be Alienware, to the tune of about $3,600. They offer the screen resolution, memory, and storage that I need. :yesnod:

OK, gurus, how about this? It's over budget, but I'll do it if we think I'll get more years of service out of this than the HP.

That's just the thing. You will never get more years of service out of anything you buy. Go big, go small, no matter. :ohnoes:

My current 4+yo HP has the wireless internet adapter cut out at random times, sometimes several times in one day, sometimes a week with no problems. The arrow keys also quit working. Other than that, no hardware problems.

If I am only going to get 4 years out of an ASUS laptop, I might as well get the cheaper HP.

Edit: the case is cracked and broken in multiple places because I actually use a laptop....on my lap, and apparently, moving it one handed isn't good for the case. If ASUS models have tougher cases, I'd be willing to pay the extra money.

It all depends on what you are willing to put up with for the next 4-5+ years and what that is worth to you. To me, its worth the extra couple bills to be comfortable. :seasix:
