View Full Version : Sports: How is it?

I'm just curious how the psychology works with groups or cultures of people, especially in sports. Take for instance our beloved American football. Most of us at least entertain ourselves with a game on the seasonal Sunday, while a certain number of us invest hundreds if not thousands of dollars in tickets, clothing and merchandise. I'd bet that better than half of the members of this board are at least taking a passing interest in the potential lock out and what that would mean for the season later this year.
Meanwhile, just about every where else in the world, "football" means football, what we call soccer. And collectively Americans couldn't give two rats humping in a Dixie cup for soccer. Likewise, the rest of the world only watches the half time show of the Super Bowl in the off chance that somebody we might want to actually see might have a wardrobe malfunction.
So what is it that makes us, Americans (and Canadians too, I suppose) so much more invested in our football and the rest of the world invested in their football, and never the two shall meet?

I couldn't begin to tell you what makes Beckham so famous and affords him a paycheck in the hundreds of millions. People in other countries worship these guys like gods and they also have those as wives.
As for our players eh, they don't make the dough, don't get the tickertape parades or knighted by the queen. They may get to sneak into the Whitehouse but that's about it.

I could care less about professional sports and would not spend any of my time/ money on them.

Unlike you, I could not care less about professional sports.
America is the BEST and full of MANLY MEN.
Europeans are liberal sissy metro-sexuals who have disarmed themselves and given up individual liberty. So they like soccer.
Hope this helps.

True, but they do have rugby over there. Comparing rugby to American football, rugby is the real man's sport. Why? Unlike rugby players, American football players wear pads and go around patting each other on the butt.

Dude, if NFL guys wore no pads, people would LITERALLY die EVERY Sunday.
You simply cannot compare the two.
Rugby players have balls and toughness. But they're boys compared to the freakish men of the NFL.
Nope ...................muslims are playing soccer!
So add Barbarians to the list.

Anyone else we're missing?
Pro football ain't what it used to be. Players move around so much anymore that it is hard to root for a team. College football is the best though!:hurray:
Football combines two essential elements of American culture: violence and meetings.

This argument has always just made me die of laughter, soccer douches use it too.
I just tell them we can take off pads, and I'll hit you like I hit guys on the field. I promise you'll wish you were wearing pads.

I can't really argue with this. Although I do watch the NFL...I much prefer college FB.
