All I had to do was to use 4-2 x 6 x 14 PTP to cover a concrete drain on the patio. After 40 years the old wood had rotted. Yesterday I went to Lowe's to buy the 2 x 6's, plus a 2 X 4 x 8 for some cross braces. Well, Lowe's doesn't sell 14' 2 x 6's, only 12' and 16'. "Can I get a discount 'cause y'all don't have the right size?". Blank stare...which I accept as a "no".
I bought 4-2 x 6 x 16 PTP boards, which strained my truck's carrying length, but I made it home. I laid them on my saw horses and got ready to work. Durng that 30 minute trip home, the boards had decided to warp side-to-side: They now had a 3/4" gap between them. Plus one board changed its cup pattern 180 degrees from one end to the other. And, as expected, one board decided to curl up on one end by an inch. WTF??? How does wood do that?
I cured the warp by using wood clamps and 3" screws in the 2 x 4 cross braces. Will they hold? God only knows.
It's now screwed together and ready to install. Will it fit? Only God knows. Will it last? Only the same person knows. My wood ain't what it used to be. BTW, a 2 x 6 x 16 PTP nows costs $11, and an 8' 2 x 4 costs $4. This may be the last wood I have.
