It seems the upgrades to the cell towers will make the phones my wife and I have obsolete.

No more 2G signals

But these phones worked great for years

A year ago, I called in to at&t and got free Windows 8.1 phones (3 of them).
Don't go to a store, call in for better deals.
With my ex-company discount, I get a 19% cut in plan price.
For $11/month more, and no contract, we have smart phones.
15G month plus unlimited calling/texting.

I mainly use it for calls, so does the SO.
Youngest kid is heavy into all the others,
plus we use internet stuff, so all is good/worth the extra $11.00.

I know folks will find this hard to believe but we only use our as phones. :willy:

Oh, in the interest of self preservation, my wife will be picking out her own damn phone. It took a few years of me explaining before she could get her voice mails :banghead:

Samsung but easily 10 years. I did have to purchase a new battery off ebay for each of them about three years ago. I think it was about $15 shipped for two batteries.

Mine is hanging on at 11 years. I got the old one when the roommate got a newer phone 4 years ago. I did the battery thing then. The hospital has a deal with AT&T for the nurses and doctors so its wicked cheap apparently...

I doanwanna upgrade... any idea what they'll make us go to?

Flip phones are still available but they'll be digital ( 3G? ) as AT&T is doing away for 2 G service.

My wife works at the local hospital and we get a great deal too on AT&T service

Ahh good, I was afraid this was some Machiavellian Illuminati scheme forcing us to all go smartphone, so they can track us and watch us through the cameras... :leaving:

Dayum... this 60+ yr old has his calendar and schedule tethered to Google (School District), staff texts both at work and @ the airport. If I call or text the wife while she's driving, she can answer without touching the phone. The Camry's supposed to be able to do this too- once I take the time to figure it out.

btw - if AT&T is going to force you to buy new phones, you might want to cal VZW and see what they'll offer you. I just did a price comparison between the 2 and VZW is a lot cheaper each month (i'm on VZW and was going to switch, but I'm staying with VZW now)

Dang man! That's kind of awesome actually, that you got so much use out of those phones!

Cingular was bought out by AT&T around 2007 or 2008, that is an OLD phone right there. I was Cingular wireless back in the day, but that was a LONG time ago.

Good for you, sticking it to the MAN. :Jeff '79:

Can you even get a non smart phone anymore? Just Curious?

Yes- we've got a slug of them @ the airport. Brand new. Apparently back at the Corporate Office someone still thinks there are peeps out there that remember how to use a flip-phone.

Ask for a free upgrade on the phone. They give them away up here if you're a good customer and promise to stay with them for a couple years. I got a new one two years ago, and sold it! kept my flip phone and the money paid for half a year service.

You can still get phones that are just phones, the biggest problem with the newer ones is that they are lower transmit wattage than the older ones so you may have worse coverage in areas that it used to be good. I dont think anyone has sold 2G phones for about 5 years, at least none of the big three have.

Had the same problem , went to an AT&T "corporate store", not a vendor and they gave me a free phone and set it up with the old sims card.

My wife gave up her flip-phone kicking and screaming.
Wanted nothing to do with those damn new fangled smart phones.

Fast forward two years and now shes the Google, texting and Words with Friends queen... :D

You can get a pretty damn basic phone without a data plan even in 2016. Not that I'd do that but they are out there.

It seems 2G is going silent Globally. John Deere is currently running special "at cost" controller upgrades for early JDLINK equipped machines using 2G. Think OnStar for construction equipment, less the live operator on call. Offers GPS, remote diagnostics, vehicle location, trouble code reportage and such. And a remote kill option if the thing goes missing....:seasix:

My largest complaint is that if in my car, usually top down, and even in wife's 4 dr with no tint on windoze I can't read the freeking screens on anything, and when I ran a CL addy not long ago, I said no text voice only....and you know some smart ass texted me, I did not reply.....stupid ass......
