Police: Driver Hits Gazebo Featured in Chevy Chase Movie

TOWNSHEND, Vt. — Jan 23, 2016, 3:27 PM ET

Vermont state police say a drunken driver drove across a town common and struck a gazebo that was featured in the 1988 Chevy Chase movie "Funny Farm."

Police say a 71-year-old Connecticut man was charged with driving under the influence after the accident that occurred at 9:42 p.m. Friday on the Townshend town common.

Authorities say David Page's blood-alcohol content was .181 percent — more than twice the legal limit for intoxication. He had been driving north on Route 30 in the southeastern Vermont town when he drove onto the common. Page, of Groton, Connecticut, was taken to the Southern State Correctional Facility.

Page is due to appear in superior court in Windham on Feb. 9. He did not immediately return a call seeking comment. It was not immediately known if he has a lawyer.

"The gazebo was built as a prop and was offered to the town and we decided to keep it," said Hunt. "Some work has been done to it over the last 30 years, and I'd say the structural damage is significant, but not critical, I don't think the building is at risk of falling down."

Hunt said that there had been a long debate of whether the gazebo would stay in town after it had been used for the film. The town decided to keep it, but further problems came about. Hunt added that in the spring of 1988, nearly a dozen trees died on that lawn when the movie's film crew sprayed a fire-retardant foam on the maples to create the illusion of snow. Hunt said the matter had been dealt with and the movie company agreed to pay for those damages when they occurred.

One of my wife's favorite movies.

A couple of lines from the movie that have stuck with me over the years:

"Hey bud, do you know the way to Redbud?"

"How did you know my name was Bud?"

"Uh, I guessed."

"Well then, why don't you just guess your way to Redbud."

and

"That's not a bridge! That's a bunch of termites holding hands!"

"Chevy Chase Movie"... it's like "Black and White TV"... kids look at you funny and you have to explain... "No really, that was a thing years ago... I know it seems kinda hokey now, but man, we loved that shit...."
