Despite the massive success of Adele's album 25, which sold a whopping 7.4 million copies in only six weeks, 2015 marked the first time in U.S. history that new releases were outsold by catalogue albums.

The term "catalogue" refers to albums released more than 18 months ago. According to Nielsen's annual year end music report, catalogue albums outsold current releases by 4.3 million copies, something never before seen in the industry. Just 10 years ago, current music sales outpaced catalogue music by over 150 million albums.

Perhaps it's due to the so-called vinyl revival. In recent years, the sales of vinyl records have significantly increased as young music lovers are discovering the physical LP. In the first half of 2015 alone, vinyl sales increased by 52%. Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" sold 50,000 records this past year.

Dark Side came out over 40 years ago. We have passed the high point of music and seem to be riding fast down the musical drain. How else to explain Miley Cyrus and Justin Beiber. We are in the musical dark ages.

Speaking of old music, here's Joan Osborne backed by the Funk Brothers, who were the original Motown musicians on this and dozens of other hits:

That's the first song from Joan Osborne I can gut.

Throughout modern history most music has been shit. The reason the old songs are better than the new stuff is mainly because people remember good music while the shit is forgotten as soon as it drops off the charts.

Europe's new album is superb, you can listen to the whole thing on YouTube. I know, I wouldn't have thought so either. You're welcome.

Only music worth listening to these days is from Europe.Yep, symphonic metal or Gothic.
Delain
Within Temptation
Sirenia
just to name a few. As for Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, I happen to have a quadraphonic LP copy that came out in the mid 70's. I think it's rare considering that quadraphonic did not last that long, probably only 3 years at best. I have about 15 LP's in quadraphonic.

Gee...why am I not surprised....I'm not surprised either, but likely for a completely different reason.

The younger generation today doesn't know the concept of "buying music", especially on hard media. If you can't find a free mp3 of whatever, you're not looking very hard. There are web services that will rip mp3s from Youtube videos in a few seconds time. There's free streaming services such as Spotify that you can save all your songs/albums on...etc.

That's not to say current music isn't being distributed and played...It definitely is, just not in the form of record sales. I couldn't even tell you the last time I PLAYED a CD, much less purchased one. It's been several years, that's for sure.

I really miss the album artwork and such. I was fortunate enough to grow up with vinyl, and still have my albums and a decent turntable to play them on. Most music today is complete shit. Autotune for those with no voice and or skills, but make sex tapes. I don't think we will ever see the likes of Page, Clapton, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Knopfler....and the list goes on and on, ever again. Lyrics are trash, and the "music" if that's what you want to call it, is digitized crap. Kids today absolutely don't value a live performance. Too bad they didn't get to see Van Halen in 1982 for Diver Down, or the Grateful Dead a few times. I didn't see nearly everyone I wanted to, but the ones I saw were fantastic!:seasix:

I'd love to have a turntable, but then I'd have to buy everything else and then get complained at for playing it too loud.

I have that CD and the Funk Brothers "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown", I listen to it quite often, outstanding if you like Motown. On the DVD, the discology is listed of all the performers that used the FB's as their studio band, amazing, most of it uncredited.
