Just had my gig at Cisco eliminated. New top guy in my division so of course everything has to be re-orged. Dodged this bullet many times, guess it was my turn.

I have 2 weeks to find something internally, not likely, then I get a fairly nice little separation package.

On a positive note, this happened to my wife last month and she starts her new job Monday, so there will be no interruption of health benefits. She also wrangled a 30% pay increase.

Now all I need to do is find something, and I think I will fairly quickly, but I am going to make sure it is what I want, not just something to have something. I have a ton of contacts in the industry and have never burned any bridges, hopefully that helps.

Good luck - I HATE seeing this happen to people unless they are of retirement age and they WANT it (the separation package) to happen.

Good luck. I got laid off in December 2014 and , in my field, the job market has deteriorated to the point of being a waste of time.

At least I saw it coming and planned for it.

Maybe some new opportunities will come your way. Whatever your field is, if it makes you happy and you can make a living at it, the contact's you have may come in handy. If you're at a point in life where doing something different is an option, go for it.:cert:

The best I can wish for you is that regardless of what the future brings you will look back at this as the best thing that ever happened to you.:seasix::yesnod:

Aw, chit Doug. Sorry to hear that. No matter how well prepared you think you are, it still arrives as a shock.

Good luck finding the next gig! :cert:

At any time during your long and faithful employment, did any boss ever say something along the lines of "we are one big happy family here"?

I feel for you. Be happy you aren't in the oil industry.

Here's to a quick bounce back and a big raise in the process :cert:

If there is anything I can do, I will. If you interview near me, you have a place to stay and a hot meal. :seasix:

I always told new co-workers that we were like a family. The Manson family.:leaving:

What did you do at Cisco?

A few roles. Started as a Consulting Systems Engineer for Unified Messaging, I was a Subject Matter Expert on Cisco Unity and integrations to Active Directory and Exchange. (sales position)

Next role was a Technical Marketing Enginer, basically the same as the previous role but not in Sales, instead I worked between the Sales teams, customers and Product dev teams. Did design consulting, tech doc development, Trade show support, critical account support, that kind of thing.

Currently I am a Program Manager, working with prodcut dev teams to coordinate 35-50 different products to release at the same time as a solution, while working with Marketing, Partner development and various other groups to resolve go-to-market issues.

Same thing happened to a very good friend around Thanksgiving time last year. He was in sales at Cisco. I think Cisco is tightening the belt and their only option left is eliminating people.

Good luck with your search, I hope you take a couple of weeks to relax and recharge before you start the always stressful job search process.

I have been extremely bored for the last 2 years, I needed a push to make a change, this was more like a shove but I will leave with a nice pile of cash and have many people reaching out to me already. I am going to make sure whatever I do it will have the elements that make me happy day to day. No more putting up with shit for comfort and safety. No such thing anyway.

Exactly, save your loyalty for friends and family, not your employer.

Good luck Doug! Although I started a new job a couple of weeks ago (for less pay :( ), I'm still getting calls from recruiters.

There is work out there.

Cisco corp has been making some really bad decisions in the past few years. You should be good to go as many Cisco employees are still highly regarded. Wish you the best in your future career decisions.

I worked at Kodak for 14 years, left in 1996, seeing many similarities. I am looking towards smaller partner companies or some contract work. My wife has all the health bennies at her job so it gives me some flexibility.

I was stunned at the exit package, really helped with the decision to leave. No way I am leaving it on the table.

Cisco has been offshoring more and more of their talent over the past 15 years. I spent a great deal of time working with them in China and India before I got laid off.
I am happy to hear you got a decent package. Find something you will enjoy.
