Serena Williams recovering in L.A. hospital after emergency treatment for blood clot in her lungs

Wednesday, March 2nd 2011, 12:11 PM

Spirited tennis star Serena Williams, winner of 13 major titles, was recovering Wednesday in a Los Angeles hospital from emergency treatment for a blood clot in her lungs at Cedars Hospital.

A representative for the Williams family, Nicole Chabot, told People magazine that Serena, 29, had undergone treatment Monday for a condition which may or may not have been related to her continued foot problems.

"Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars (Sinai Medical Center) for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation," Chabot said. "Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism which was discovered upon her return to L.A. She had been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot."

On her official Twitter account, Williams tweeted late Tuesday night, simply, "Tough day." As recently as last Saturday, she was clearly in fine spirits, tweeting, "Is it weird that I am Karaoke-ing at 2:45 (p.m.) and I've been doing it for 2 hours already?? Ineedalife."

Serena Williams hasn't played a competitive match since she captured Wimbledon last July and then cut her foot on broken glass while celebrating at a Munich restaurant. After missing both the U.S. and Australian Opens, she had hoped to come back this spring, and to compete at the French Open and then Wimbledon.

She has slipped to No. 11 in the world rankings due to inactivity, yet Williams remains America's best – and arguably, only - hope this year to capture a major tennis title.

That blood clot in the lungs thing is not good. My dad has had it twice in the last couple months. 100% fatal if not treated immediately.
