Our autocross club just finished our first annual gokart race at Andersen Race Park (http://www.andersenracepark.com/Home.aspx)
We had 20 drivers, paired into 10 teams, drawn randomly. Prize money per team $200 1st, $100 2nd and $50 3rd.
These karts do 50 mph.
Given my weight, I knew I would be a MAJOR penalty for whoever was so fortunate to get me. Fortunately for me, I got a good selection. Dude I got is 160 pounds and just won the PRO class in 2015.
Geraghty Anne in 2nd place also scored a great co-driver (George) and I mentioned in the driver's meeting he won the lottery and they were the team to beat, as GWiz is a fantastic kart driver....and only weighs 135 pounds. :yesnod:
Marcus also got a decent teammate, but his teammate, like me, is also a bit "fluffy". They figured out my strategy during the race and mimicked it late in the race to let Marcus run most of the laps.
Rules state that the 1st 10 laps are no pit stops, and the last 10 laps are no pit stops. Each team is required to make 5 stops, BUT are not required to change drivers if strategy so dictates.
My co-driver Mike set the pole position during the 30 minute practice session, thus got to go off first. 75 lap race, and I let him run the first 30 laps (ended up being 33), then I took only 5 laps, sent him back out for 15 or so, then I only took 1 remaining lap.
That still left us one more pit stop, but he got the last 29 laps. I brought him in with about 15 to go and sent him back out. Driver change not required. It's that damn power to weight ratio again. :D
Long story short, both the 1st and 2nd place teams ran out of gas and had to take an extra pit, but we still beat them by a lap.
Geraghty Anne and her co-driver did equal duty, and she matched his lap times within 1 tenth at most. They truly were the team to beat. Unfortunately, Dad being the competitive prick that he is, felt that 6 laps in a 75 lap race were all that his big fat ass needed to drive.
Gnomeo (Marcus) was also exceptionally fast. Both he and George had previously done a 6-hour enduro at the same venue, so both had experience coming in.
What a fun day....so VERY proud of GWiz, as every single driver at that event is a seasoned racer. I'm pretty sure she's enjoying that crisp $50 bill in her pocket. :hurray:
