Parents Get Son's Letter From Iraq Almost 11 Years Later

ROANOKE, Va. — Jan 11, 2016, 6:24 AM ET 3 Shares

A Virginia couple was surprised after receiving a letter their son sent almost 11 years ago while serving in Iraq.

The Roanoke Times reports David Craig got the letter last week from his son Lynn Craig, who returned safely from Iraq in September 2005.

The missing letter, dated March 14, 2005, was written about a month after Lynn Craig had been in Iraq. At that time, he was a lance corporal of the U.S. Marine Corps. He's still part of the Reserve.

The Craigs say they'd like to know where the letter has been all this time.

U.S. Postal Service spokesman Tad Kelley says there's no way of knowing what happened in transit from Iraq to Roanoke, Virginia, adding it's very rare for letters to go missing for that long

I was conversing with a young lady in the states while I was stationed in Okinawa back in the early '80's. She used to send me cassette tapes with her talking to me on them... Well after I had PSC'ed from Okinawa and gotten MARRIED and was now back in the states I received a package forwarded from the PCS in Okinawa. Inside was a cassette tape and a mangled envelope. There was a note stating the package had gotten caught in some postal handling equipment and was just recently found. My new wife was not happy to see I was receiving audio tapes from strange women! This tape was a little over 2-years old by the time it made it to me.
