Bill Cosby is expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon on sexual assault charges filed over a 2004 encounter in his home outside Philadelphia.

Prosecutors say the comedian urged the former Temple University employee to take pills he had and to drink wine. Kevin Steele, Montgomery County's first assistant district attorney, says the woman was paralyzed and unable to respond to his advances — and that Cosby committed aggravated indecent assault.

Steele says recently released excerpts from Cosby's deposition in a civil lawsuit led to the renewed investigation.

Steele says that after seeing the deposition material "reopening this case was not a question, rather it was our duty."

Cosby's lawyer declined to comment on the charge before the announcement. The 78-year-old comedian said under oath that he had consensual sexual contact with the woman.

I suspect it's publicity and a chance to cash in. I also suspect that there's a bit of grandstanding on the part of this new District Attorney in PA who's looking to make a name for himself.

I'm in no way condoning what Cosby did. But putting him on trial is like Germany putting an ex-SS officer on trial and convicting him at age 94. At this point, what are you really going to accomplish? Use the money that you would spend bringing all these resources to bear on ways to counsel people and prevent this behavior from happening in the first place.

The files containing this latest action were sealed by a previous court after Cosby paid her an undisclosed amount years ago to bury the case. This DA opened the sealed file and is proceeding with the criminal charges anyway. :toetap:

Here’s what should happen with Cosby:

The man is worth an estimated $400M. A meeting is called at the DA’s office with Cosby and his attorney. In exchange for a plea bargain to some minor 3rd degree assault charge, Cosby writes a check for $10M to the woman. He then writes another check for $10M to an organization (or group of organizations) that help women who deal with rape or date rape or similar. Then he’s put on lifetime probation. There are no news releases, no press conferences, everyone goes away quietly and as long as he keeps it in his pants, he gets live out however much is left of his life in peace. If he refuses, the gloves come off, he risks a felony charge and it becomes a big circus like the OJ trial.

This is the best possible outcome. Financial restitution in made (because at this point, that’s all that can be made to the woman), some help groups get a good financial shot in the arm, and the media frenzy is denied another idiotic sensationalized trial.

Of course, that won’t happen because someday this DA likely wants to run for Senate. :spdchk:

I have no doubts that Cosby did some fu*ked up shit, but in this particular case, the woman in question evidently WILLINGLY took the ludes and drank the alcohol. At least according to what I heard in the 'media'.

That said, it's still no excuse to take advantage of somebody, but I'm sure Cosby's Attorney's will use it to bolster their case.

There has been way too many women coming forward pointing the finger at the guy, so it's pretty apparent, in my mind, that the guy is a Sleeze Ball, but a lot of time has passed.
