for Christmas - do not buy each other gifts? Christmas presents are bought though, but we buy what we want ourselves.
Of the 34 years we've been married, about the last 30 we havent purchased Christmas presents for each other. Instead, Yvonne (the money guru) sets the amount... and we go and buy ourself - whatever we actually want.
It has eliminated a lot of hassle; during the first few years - whatever I bought her was either the wrong color, size, style. And anything she bought for me... I practically had to give her part numbers, the companys name where to buy...
It's been a lot easier to just purchase for ourselves, no wrapping, no disappointment, no returns; always get exactly what we wanted.
Oh we still put up a tree and decorations.
Anyone else settle into this type of arrangement ?

I asked around and finally Linda gave me a specific call out and so I got it all a couple weeks ago....but I got a another Giraffe for the collection, she was asking me, and I just flatfooted, have NO clue,
:dance::leaving:
We only do presents for the young kids in the family. FRISKYette and I already have too many toys. Decades ago we figured out that it's difficult to give someone something if that person already has everything they need or want.

Nope. We don't buy each other anything for Christmas (Nothing over $50), Birthdays, Anniversaries, etc... We go on trips. Wife is just like me-if we see something we want, we just buy it.
I don't want monetary gifts any more any way. I've told my kids either make me something or give to charity.

Just the kids get Christmas presents.

But regardless they are the same way, they never know what to get each other for special occasions because whenever they want something they just go ahead and buy it (for the most part...).

We do that , however, we do buy one thing for each other, just to keep the tradition.
She buys herself what she wants and I tell her what I want because she likes to shop and I dont. It has been working out. I do wrap what she gets for herself and then put it under the tree but there are no 'surprises' from either of us to the other.

Wife and I still get each other gifts. It's not much. Just something from the heart.

My family = 6 kids. After the last one (me) moved out, my parents told us that they didn't want anything for Christmas from any of us.
They already had everything they needed; and wanted us to concentrate on our own families instead. Even though I never had any kids... I appreciated when they made this decision.
Seems that just getting together for a holiday meal... meant a lot to them.

Same. We don't like the idea of blowing off Christmas completely.

For me that was always the best part... :seasix:
Gifts are for the kids, as I know how much they look forward to that.
But I like what Jeff said also about just keeping the tradition. :yesnod:

Christmas is mostly for the kids I think, and believe me I do remember..
It was only just 50 years ago I was an 8 years old kid.. so I know! and I do remember... :D
Good gosh.. do you remember the excitement of not being able to go to sleep on Christmas Eve? and hoping to see Santa in person?
Leaving cookies and milk for him?
Then waking up the next day rushing to the Christmas tree to see the bottom covered with gifts just for you and your sister?
Santa always only took just one bite from the cookie, why was that? chocolate chips are not his favorite?
I sure do remember, but now what I really miss the most.. is all of the family being together that one special day of the year.
Sadly, almost all of them are gone now and I miss them all very much.
Merry Christmas to all of you OLD kids here! :datawiz:

Similar story here. At some point, it was decided that our parents didn't need any more "stuff," so we gave them a basket of gift certificates every year. Restaurants, theater tickets, even grocery stores. Just to get them out of the house. They always enjoyed going out, but did so less and less as they got older.
We treat each other to Christmas year round. We do splurge a little more after Thanksgiving.
I do surprise her with Roses and Lobster during the year. She always likes those.

We pretty much buy what we want thoughout the year, within our means, of course, so we dont exchange gifts.

So were mine. Makes buying 8 days worth of gifts for a spoiled brat a real pain in the ass. (After about day 4, they reverted to chocolate Chanukah "Gelt")

Same here. Kids and I get what we want, then go through the motions of wrapping it and we actually take possession on XMAS day. The only ones who get presents that are surprised are the dogs.

From January to August I listen. If the roommate specifically mentions something three times, it goes on the list. If on Thanksgiving she hasn't bought the thing herself, that's her present.
2 years ago it was a BluRay player, last year a 'lectric Mixer, this year a garden wagon.
She hasn't figured it out and thinks I can somehow read her mind.

it varies by the year for my wife and me. Some years we buy each other stuff. Some years we keep it very simple and buy something for ourselves. Some years we find something bigger that we both want/need.
This year we bought each other gifts.

With Christmas being on a Friday we've decided to spend the weekend going to the after Christmas sales and getting ourselves what we want.
My stepdaughter and her husband are doing very well financially at the present time and will lavish wonderful gifts on us and the rest of their family. We are going there for dinner tomorrow. We usually have Dungeness crab but crab season has been cancelled because El Nino has caused warmer water and there is a toxin in the crab meat. We will have to struggle through with prime rib an Alaskan king crab. My son-in-law and his daughter are going to the Raider/Chargers game in Oakland tonight. The wife, daughter and I will watch on TV.
