Do you still also have the alarm business?

still have the residential business...sold the commercial business. residential is pretty inconsequential at the moment. might start concentrating on growing that some more now.

I always thought a Bluewater would be a good boat to use for that adventure. Shallow draft and their props are some what recessed. Drive above and below.

Make sure you start a thread when you start shopping. :D

looked at a bluewater last year. Nice boats, spacious. But I will also be wanting something capable of, well, blue water. there's a 150 mile gulf crossing involved, and will definitely want to hit the bahamas, carribean etc. I wouldnt trust a bluewater to do that

yeah, now i remember that. Definitely wont mind looking at what ya got. will probably be about a year before we get too serious. I will be using a buyers broker.

send me some links to what ya got:cheers:

im a big dude. 6'6", 240. a king bed would be tits, but i know thats pretty hard to find. headroom is important, shower size etc. have been thinking transom/cockpit hot and cold shower might be important as i might just shower outside.

has to be able to clear a 19' bridge.
pilot house preferable with a bridge. plenty of bridge space for lounging, entertaining, drinking etc.

Did you sell to one of the big boys? I did a fair amount of M&A work when I was in the security business. Good for you to take it to completion -- lots of deals fall apart at the last minute...

Think about fuel capacity as well. There's a 250 mile stretch on the Tom Bigbee that is without fuel stops (although we have filled up from a tank truck that snaked the hose over the levee :)).

It would be good to double check current status on that Illinois bridge. We're across the lake from Chicago (Holland/Grand Haven) and our water is up about 4 feet over the last three years. As of October, Lake Michigan is about 24 inches above chart datum - the depth numbers you see printed on NOAA's charts.

Congrats on the sale and enjoy Looping! When you pass through Lake Michigan, drop me a note and I'll take you out for some killer Salmon fishing!

No, I intentionally tried to avoid the big boys at all costs. Tyco bought out my brother about 6 months before they bought simplex. 3 years later their office here closed down. Tyco security just bought out a friendly competitor about a year ago. Am seriously considering sending them a "salesman of the year" plaque for what they have done for my business..they have pissed a lot of people off.

I sold to a 40 year old local IT company. Just made sense with just about all of our card access and cctv running on networks these days. We pretty much had the deal done on a handshake. then the lawyers got involved and that delayed shit a while, but its finally done.

Yeah, Im assuming anything i get in that size will be diesel, and probably twin screws. Most of those I have seen have some serious tank capacities.

That's interesting. I didnt think that bridge was affected by pool levels, always thought it was a controlled depth at that point :dunno: Is there a place to take out and launch on other side if things get sticky?

No place to retrieve/launch if you can't clear. The Loopers call it The Great U-Turn if you are too tall. :yesnod:

Somewhere I have a picture of us clearing by 6" with a 50' Chris Craft motor yacht. :hurray::D

There is a lock by downtown Chicago and another in Lockport. Could be they control the Illinois River's level. Worth checking into.

I know what you mean about the big guys. We were one of those and often screwed up what was a great little business. Sometimes the 'synergies' worked, but all too often they don't.

It looks like they do control the water level under the bridge at Mile 300.6 -- it's actually on the Chicago Ship and Sanitary Canal.

Here's a couple of posts I found on Cruising Forums:

The lowest bridge that cannot be avoided on the Great Loop/Great Circle Route is 19.1 feet at mile 300.6 on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal after the Chicago River/Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Calumet Sag Channel join south-west of Chicago. This is the AT&S Railroad Bridge which is shown on the charts as a swing bridge. It is inoperable and no longer opens. THERE IS NO WATER ROUTE AROUND THIS FIXED BRIDGE FOR GREAT LOOP CRUISERS.

Pier 11 Marina, Chicago, at mile 323.2 Cal-Sag Channel, has a 60-ton travelift to 20' wide, 773-468-9605. They may un-step masts and lower radar arches.

From Lake Michigan the Chicago River flows through downtown Chicago and becomes the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. The lowest bridge through this route is 17 feet at mile 320.4, an inoperable bascule railroad bridge. The other route, the Cal Sag Channel, has a bridge height restriction of 20-something feet.

Either way you must be able to clear the 19.1 feet fixed bridge mentioned above which is down river of both channels.

We had a 53MY kept near there. We did the Great Loop and went under that bridge, which is at mile 300 of the Illinois Waterway, many times on our way to and from the Great Lakes. It is the lowest fixed bridge on the Loop and there is no way around it with higher bridge clearance. The normal pool stage will keep it at about 19' 1", but they let the water down if they are expecting a big rainstorm surge so they are lower in advance of a flood.

There is no way to get them to lower the pool for you. A 100 footer that draws 22 ft. of air made it under with lots of 50 gal drums of water all over the boat to lower it down to 22 ft. and waited 2 weeks for the pool tp be let down before a flood.
