what do you do for a living there?

Started off here with just ebay, but now also have quite a few websites going

do you have running water?

I didn't use to for about 6 years, did for a few years till the well pump broke, now I don't :D

It's only been a couple few or three months now, so no rush..

what do you eat besides rice?

About everything gets served... with rice

do you have a car/moto..etc?

Just a motorcycle now, but did have a Suzuki truck for a few years when I lived in the city, probably had it for about a year or so when we moved to this island and sold it off. It was at the point where I worked on it more than I drove it so was tired of it.

I may get a Jeep someday, you can get the 2 wheel drive versions here with Toyota engines in them pretty cheap. they are not real Jeep's, but use a body that looks like one.

do they have birth control of any type?

Yep, my wife was on them for a few years after we had our first daughter, she said they made her feel bad so quit... that was 3 more kids ago.

I had her neutered since then.. :D

why did you leave the states?

I really didn't plan to leave, I’m from Dayton, Ohio myself and came over here to the Philippines in 2003, about 12 years ago now on a "don’t know when I'll be back trip" and just never went back..
(other than a few quick trips to visit family)

Ended up meeting "girl next door" about 3 or 4 months later, and after about 6 months of chaperoned dates we were married, we now have 4 children here, "Aaliyah" at 10 years, and 7 year old boy "Chico", "Amber" who is 5 years old now, and Now Steve our 3 year old (almost 4 now) named after my father.

For years a day dream of mine was always to live on a beach somewhere someday, I also liked that Disney Movie... Swiss Family Robinson when I was a kid.

I don't have any, but they look just like the old Willy's at a glance.

I think they just put the body's on any old car frame to be honest, but have seen a few with Toyota engines in them.

They also have all stainless steel body's you can buy, and they look nice.

So explain to me the Internet business eBay thing?
Do you send stuff out?
What do you sell?
How often do you have electricity or Internet?
What's the currency exchange rate?
Do you have a mortgage?

Most of what I sell on ebay is reprint shop manuals, I stay with at most around 75 pages to keep the weight and cost to make cheap enough to still be affordable at $9.95 to $14.95 for the most part plus shipping cost.

Actually my sales were a lot better ten years ago than they are these days.

Ebay is not what it use to be by a long shot anymore.. :yesnod:

I use to do everything in print, but over time went to mostly all digital downloads as the mails from here sometimes take over a month, and people do not read! so is annoying dealing with people always in a hurry, that were also in too much of hurry to bother reading shipping times.

Americans are a pain in the ass to deal with!!!.. :yesnod: :seasix: :datawiz:

I have three websites now that sell digital pdf download manuals, the one site use to do pretty good but over the last few years sales just keep dropping off, then earlier this year I was trying to make my site beter?? and ended up screwing myself with Google and lost most all of my traffic.

Went from about 1200 page fews a day to less than 100.. :(

Its slowly building back up and up to about 200 a day now.. but lost the majority of our income this year by making a dumb mistake..

We also have some more sites that do not sell anything, just content, but we do make a bit off of the Google Adsense ads every month that helps make ends meet.

How often do you have electricity or Internet?

We have electric most of the time... back in 2013 after Typhoon Yolanda we were without power for over three months, so relied on using a generator in the evenings to keep up with work stuffs

We still have a lot of brownouts they call them here, I never understood why they call it brown when its a black out. :island14:

Also windy and rainy days the internet gets really slow or none at all, like most of all day here today

What's the currency exchange rate?

Right now its getting better, its been about 45.5 to 1 lately, but was down to about 39/1 a few years ago.

That hurt! as prices keep going up and my dollar kept going down.

When I first came here in 2003 the exchange was pretty good, at about 56.7/1

Do you have a mortgage?

Nope, not anymore, our lot we bought on installments but paid it off a few years ago.

And a good thing too, as we could not afford the payments anymore with the way income is these days.. which were about $100 USD a week.

My Mom and Dad are gone now, just within the past few years, I have a Sister that actually joined us here at the barn for just a few post while she was checking up on me after the 2013 Typhoon.

Three daughters back there and also lots n lots of cool cousins.

Id like to go back someday to visit, but have no plans to ever go back to the USA to live again.

I truly think this is a much better place for my kids to grow up and live than anywhere I have ever been.

I'd actually like to try to talk my daughters in the USA to come live here too.

Only one has been here, and she loved it here...

You mention Expats.. there are quite a few of them here but I rarely ever see any.. I don't go to town much where they hang out and prefer to just do my drinking here with my local buddys... cheaper, and a lot less problems.. :yesnod:

Have you gone over to Robs and met my Sis yet?

island14
12-22-2015, 12:42pm
So what religion is there?

Mostly Catholic in the central and northern Parts, with a smaller mix of Muslim

But down south it is a Muslim majority..

There also some smaller Christian type churches here and there, and Jehovah's Witnesses

My Wife is Catholic and went over to the big church late last night about 3AM in the morning along with my Son.

They have a Tricycle that you can take that picks up here in our village for those who do not have their own transportation.

I could have drove them myself, but someone needs to stay here with our other kids.

There is also a small chapel here in the village that has services a few times a week.

But, then, we couldn't be living vicariously through Tim...

As someone who has been in and out of the P-I since the mid-80s, a middle ground is somewhat available. The biggest negative in the middle ground is health care. Angeles City has a population around 320k. While there are multiple hospitals, the quality is still lacking. Also, the city is inland with the beach/sea being about an hours drive away. Angeles also has many conveniences of first world available; neighborhoods just like many in the US, restaurants, and even multiple malls.
So, one can be in a sort of middle ground with Angeles. It goes back to what Tim said earlier involving trade-offs. You will trade some things for others in the debate of living in the US vs P-I.
