My mom was a school teacher, dad was in the Army (he died when I was young). Both were hard-working, frugal, God-fearing folks. On the other hand, I've sown wild oats, been sometimes pretty morally lax, but have been lucky financially and spent on possessions.

Now, though, I find myself walking around the house turning off lights and adjusting the thermostats. I bitch to my daughter about her spending too damn much money. I check the feckin' prices on the label at the grocery. I have even cut back on the amount of shaving cream I put on my face! I decided today to start changing my own oil since it cost $39 to have it done. I guess next I'll start limiting my showers to once a week to save on the water bill. (That'll save on soap and shampoo, too.)

Have you reached that stage yet?

Cliffs: I'm gettin' old!

The only way I'm like my dad is that I seem to be on the same schedule with medical problems. All minor so far, but the scary part is he first had cancer when he was about my age.

My Father Friends use to say I was his exact double at whatever age I was in looks and attitude. I beleive I have many of the same strengths and weaknesses.

And both my parents had reputation's of being able to party like Rock stars until they were in their 60's. I try to keep up the family tradition.

No, I've made it a point to be nothing like my parents.

Better man and father than my father, not a worrywart like my mother.

No brag, just fact.

I love my parents dearly and both have outstanding character traits. That said, I wouldn't want to be like them.

I'm starting to get my mom's irregular heartbeat, so I guess the answer is yes.

Fortunately, it's a nuisance and not life threatening.

My father was a hardworking, extremely intelligent man who also happened to be a functional alcoholic. He got drunk every night and got up and went to work everyday. Rose high as you could get in his job, went from a high school graduate pipe-fitter to project manager for a major chemical company. He died at 46 from pancreatic cancer. I have tried to emulate him in his work ethic but not much else about his life. He never was much of a father other than providing a place for us to live and money to live on. I can count the number of times he actually participated with me in anything in my life. He might have seen me play baseball or football 3 or 4 times in my entire childhood. Even with these faults I still loved him dearly.
I tried my best to be 100 times the father my father was and I now see that I could have even done a better job. My own son puts me to shame in how close he is to his boys and how involved in their lives. I am very proud of him.
On the other hand my wife is exactly like her Mother, a woman she actively disliked growing up and swore she'd never be like her mother, now she has turned into her. Maybe not physically but certainly in the way she treats her kids and husband.

My dad died when he was 45. I'm 49, so I guess I'm in uncharted territory.

Nope- not all all like my folks. I'd like to say I'm a better man than my dad, but I'd be lying. Different is a better description. My wife, on the other hand, is so much like her dad it's almost comical.

I thank my parents for showing me how I don't want to live. I grew up very poor and never want to live like that again. I'm very different than both my parents. My two sisters on the other hand...

God I hope not.

Heart attack at 43
Quadruple bypass at 57
Aortic aneurysm surgery at 60
Pacemaker at 61

Of course, there are some ways I'm very much like him. We're heading to a casino this weekend. :D

Both parents lawyers, who started one of largest labor law firms in the country. Great child hood, highlights being able to sit in front row of Supreme court as parents presented cases before Supreme court. Not many lawyers go before Supreme court, watched my parents two times before Supreme court:cheers:
Not in my cards to be like my parents, maybe if I grew up poor would have been?
Have done very well myself, but not like my parents.
