View Full Version : I have a theory...We may have reached max Rep

Someone or (someones), please give DAB rep and see if it finally increases.

I gave him rep, and I swore it went to 2.4 billion, but now back to 2.14 billion.

For those not in computer science, the maximum value of a 4-byte integer value is 2.147 billion.

This is simply a theory. Let's see what happens.

"per wikipedia", the max size of a 32-bit integer is 2,147,483,647, which is slightly smaller than your current value. My guess is that reputation includes the addition of the other fields as well. (posts, thanks, ....)

That being said, I'm pretty sure you won't see 2.2 billion.

just not something that is in my fields of endeavor, so i would never have formulated such a theory, and then backed it up.

Well guys, some of you knew this day was coming, the time has come that the Rep system comes to an end here. :(

While the maximum amount could be tweaked in the database to support 64 bits, let's face it, it took less than 2 months to reach this point. It wouldn't be too much longer and we'd be right back in the same position again.

Vbulletin also advises that having multiple users with the max rep amount will start generating forum bugs and database errors, and since that has now happened, it's in our best interest to stop it immediately.

After discussing this with Gary, we agreed it's time to just kill it off completely. We are also removing the bargraphs near your avatar, since they are basically useless.

The rest of the Experience/points system will remain active, so things like posts, threads started, days online, referrals, etc will still be functional and generate points. The popular and active people will still rise to the top, just not with the ridiculous points compounding that Rep offered.

Sorry it had to come to this, it was a fun system when used occasionally, and a nice way to leave comments to others for those special posts.

You may experience some slowdowns in the forum tonight to recount everyone's point totals without the Rep values.

Leaderboard should now be accurate minus all Rep activities. All "giveaway" points were deleted too.

Everyone's score has been recounted.

If the names at the top now look unfamiliar, keep in mind each day online here generates points too, and most at the top have been here since day one.

As time goes on, you OT postwhores will eventually rise to the top again :D , but right now, those that have only been here a couple months have that time disadvantage to make up.

At the time you made this post, your posts were exactly 1/2 your points for posts, so I'm guessing each post gets 2 points. ;)

Who came up with that arbitrary number ?????

2 to the 32nd power is 4,294,967,296, hence the reason it's maxed at 2.147.

The range of integer values that can be stored in 32 bits is 0 through 4,294,967,295 or −2,147,483,648 through 2,147,483,647 using two's complement encoding. Hence, a processor with 32-bit memory addresses can directly access 4 GB of byte-addressable memory.

So now his rep is going into the bit bucket. Let's see who knows that old term.

Before my time, but I surmised "memory leak".

Pretty close.

Bit bucket
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Not to be confused with the Mercurial hosting service Bitbucket.
In computing, the bit bucket is jargon for where lost computerized data has gone, by any means; any data which does not end up where it is supposed to, being lost in transmission, a computer crash, or the like, is said to have gone to the bit bucket — that mysterious place on a computer where lost documents go, as in:
"What happened to that important spreadsheet that I was just editing?"
"Oh, it went into the bit bucket."

The chip receiver (or "bit bucket") from a UNIVAC key punch.
Originally, the bit bucket was the container on teletype machines or IBM key punch machines into which chad from the paper tape punch or card punch was deposited; the formal name is "chad box" or (at IBM) "chip box".
The term was then generalized into any place where useless bits go including the trash can or rubbish bin. In Unix and Unix-like operating systems, this term is used to refer to /dev/null. In OpenVMS, this term refers to SYS$NULL:. The same Univac 90/60 operating systems such as VS/9, it referred to "*DUMMY". On the DEC PDP-11, the bit bucket is "NL:". On DOS and Windows, it is the "NUL" device.
The bit bucket is also used in discussions of bit shift operations. When the width of a given binary number is fixed, one or more bits are lost when performing a simple shift. These bits are said to have "fallen off" or to have "fallen into the bit bucket". Some CPUs move the last bit shifted off the end of a number during a shift into the carry flag during some or all shift operations; since the bit bucket is usually considered the place where discarded (and therefore lost) bits go, the carry flag in this case would probably be excluded from the bit bucket—unless, perhaps, the speaker intended to ignore the bit saved in the carry flag and treat it as though it had been truly discarded.
Such a device is sometimes referred to as a "write once read never" or WORN device (named after the magneto-optical WORM devices used during the 80s), and was indeed implemented as such as an Easter egg in early versions of Atari BASIC.
The WORN is related to the FINO "First In Never Out" stack and the WOM "Write Only Memory", implemented by Signetics in 1972.
In programming languages the term is used to denote a bitstream which does not consume any computer resources such as CPU or memory. In C# it is the Stream.Null[1].

Tom
