View Full Version : I'm an Evil Bastard

I sit here every Monday morning at my volunteer job in the surgery waiting room. Throughout the morning, dozens of hospital employees pass by my desk on their way to the start of their work week. Everyone from upper management to housekeepers to RNs to cafeteria workers. They all look grumpy, and who wouldn't on a Monday morning?

And there I sit with a huge smile on my face and give them a cheerful "Good Morning!" It's taken over a year, but I've got them all trained to walk in with a smile on their face and a Good Morning back to me.

Yeah, I'm evil. I get out of bed at 4:30 AM to do this evil deed. They have no choice but to start their week happy. I leave them no alternative.:yesnod:

My wife says a cheerful good morning to me every day when I come down to go to work, it bugs me.

You know what else I do? I smile and say good morning to the patients and their families, too. Some of them are terrified of the procedure they are about to undergo. They haven't eaten or had any thing to drink since last night. That means no coffee this morning. For some this is the most stressful day they have ever experienced. And I make everyone of them enter pre-op with the knowledge that the first person they met today smiled and wished them a cheerful good morning. Most look happy after that. Many seem confused. I'm getting frighteningly good at this. I have made women who are getting a hystorectomy smile.:seasix:

Thinking about it...

Most of these people you see on a daily basis are scared to death to even be there.

To have someone like you to bring a smile and a bit of assurance probably means the world to them at a time of their life like this. :yesnod:

But then again you know that.

I'm actually proud to know you!

Of course, I'm not exactly lying, but I'm just having a little fun here. The whole OR crew is composed of wonderful people who love their work, and it shows. It's a pretty damn good atmosphere when you consider what takes place here every day.

And the smiling and saying good morning to everybody was actually part or our orientation as employees and volunteers. It's part of the security program. You greet everyone you see in the hallway and act like you know them, and it makes it more difficult for a stranger with bad motives to travel about freely in the building. Believe it or not, it's why they have greeters at Walmart. It actually cuts down on shoplifting when everyone gets spoken to and smiled at when the walk in the door. Bad guys prefer anonymity and stealth.

I know you do not believe.

But one thing I have truly seen is... sometimes we are placed to do good things, and I do think it is the work of a higher power... :yesnod:

Atheists can believe things like that. We just believe the higher power is our own consciousness or some unknown force in the universe. Or good liquor.
My Atheism is not because of what I don't believe is true, but more on what is yet to be known.:cert:

others it appears to unnerve them. good.

I do that sometimes too!

There is one guy here that just hates me.. I can just feel it, that lives here in our village.

Just saw him tonight off in the woods, while driving around looking for a few of my buddys.. and stopped to greet him and invited him to drink with me.. with a big smile :D

I knew he wouldn't... but just love hearing his excuses...

I just read every word. Good on you, Mr Peabody. You're an evil good. And good on Tim, the fella who did lots of good just by being himself. I often think about Tim as I'm posting. I wonder where he'd take the threads. I'm sure the path would involve fun and good along the way too.

I try to do the same. It's also been brought to my attention that I pay lots of compliments as well. You just never know what's going on in someone's life, you may be the only kindness they experience all day. Keep up the good work!!!

Can somebody put Tims avatar back? I didn't notice the date and for a split second I forgot he was gone.
