It's truly amazing what some folks can do with some flux core welding wire, electric and a boat load of bird crap :willy: :puke:
It should be mentioned that I am not a well seasoned metal worker and there has already been some trial and error along the way. I'm building this in my home garage with what I would consider ordinary tools. I'm using a cheap flux core wire welder and a sawzall. I have pretty limited experience welding and my welds are not pretty but they are holding well.
WOW, just freaking wow

Good grief those are horrible. He could at least clean the spatter off.
Then again when they look like that why bother?
Speaking of welding issues, there's a huge issue with preheat/interpass temperatures in the nuclear industry right now. How they're measuring it, ARE they measuring it, what do the weld procedures say, how is it documented etc. It's turned into quite a shit show.
All I know is that "stack of dimes" is what you want to hear.
That looks like a squeeze tube of toothpaste. Not dimes.

I have this bad feeling those snot globs are going to crack when he runs the tractor. Why not practice until you can do something that looks acceptable.
I can only imagine what the nuclear procedures are. The welders at work are having enough "fun" with just mil spec procedures and documentation.
Plus you are at the mercy of the inspector too. If they are having a bad day, you will too.

:iagree: He should invest in a grinder and a lot of grinding disks.

For the most part they follow B31.1 which is the Power Piping Code. Structural supports follow AWS D1.1. Pipe hangers and supports put you back in the Power Piping Code again.
The Weld Procedures aren't really all that cumbersome. The real info sits in site specific weld manuals. That's where it gets dicey and complicated.
QC requirements are another matter entirely. A typical pipe weld will have a hold point -basically a QC inspection- for cleanliness, preheat, purge, fit-up, a root pass inspection, an intermediate and final visual. This is all before the Level 3 NDE guy comes in and PT's your weld. And if it's a code class weld you get an RT too. That'd be an X-Ray.
That's a lot of opportunities to fuk up a simple pipe weld. Believe me.

I've tried some welding for myself, but have never reached results like this. SERIOUS welding, IMO, is better left to professionals.

You are missing the point. All that splatter is for grip. Don't want slippery parts.
