View Full Version : [Woodworking] yes, another cutting board
for a relative, they don't know about it yet.
first pic: first glue up
second: third glue up (#2 not shown, you really want to see #2? :slap:  )
little hint: after about an hour, the somewhat dried glue scraps off pretty easily, i use an old chisel. it's tacky enough that it won't smear, but still soft enough that it comes off. if you let it dry overnight, it's as hard as the wood, and much harder to remove.
you could also wipe off the wet glue with a damp rag, but that's messy, and you run the small risk of diluting the glue between the boards and weakening the glue and thus the joint. :rasta: no, not that joint :slap:
First project in the new shop?
First project in the new shop?
not quite, first i've shown. also have a little box project underway, i'll show it when it's done. it's a box to hold my branding irons. lacewood, wenge, walnut top, with mahogany and white oak and maple accents. :DAB:

Doug, this is one of my sites, I will set up a free account for you if you want to list a few different designs over there.
Quality items like yours on the home page would be a bonus to my online store. :seasix:

Let me look this over later.
I rarely have a stock of completed items laying around. I normally make things as requested.
all sanded, wetted down with mineral spirits to remove dust, give me a good idea of finished color.
:DAB::smash:
:rofl::rofl::rofl:
i show one picture on here and FB, and the requests start rolling in....gotta get some more lumber tomorrow. lots of lumber.
need to build an entertainment center, wall hung shelf system, and coffee table, all of walnut. :faint:

That's really nice. :seasix:
I've made many cutting boards, but never an endgrain one. Do you run it through a planer, and if so, does that give you any trouble? Or do you use a drum sander, or?

A planer will tear out the grain. So no.
Random orbit sander. Sometimes belt sander if I need to take lots off to get it to sit flat.
Hours of sanding. :DAB:
and the finish is on. :DAB:
12 x 16-3/4, 2" thick :faint: heavy too.

DAB made me one a couple of years ago, it's really nice. Sits out on my kitchen island 24/7. Still looks brand new.

 I knew that last part would get you all riled up!
We use it, but it's admittedly something I will never cut raw meat on. Ever. I use it for veggies/fruit/bread, that's about it. Sorry. :leaving:

i don't suggest cutting raw or cooked meat on wood boards. some folks do, but i don't suggest doing so.
veggies, bread, serving tray, pizza....just avoid juices that can go bad.
if water no longer beads, it's time to put another coat of finish on it. I use Howards Butcher Block Conditioner, available at Homey Depot, in the finish aisle next to the stains. about $10 for a bottle, should last you years. a combo of mineral oil and beeswax, both food safe.
full moon rising over the shop tonight, guesthouse in distance.

I've been hitting it with mineral oil and the wax my wife uses to keep loose hairs in check. Hope that's ok.

As long as it's food safe.

It should be. I've ate off both...things.
Whoa whoa whoa there, way too much info. :slap:
when life gives you lemons, you are supposed to make lemonade
when life gives you scraps, you make wooden spoons.
walnut and cherry cutoffs from the cutting board above.
:DAB:
book matched, cut from the same block of wood. about 14" long, longer than normal, just because.

Really like those! Great job. :seasix:
My mom's choice of weapon, when I was a kid, was the wooden spoon; they give me an uneasy feeling when I see them, to this day.
Edit: I'll say though, if I had to take a beating with one, it might as wall be nice; those look pretty nice. :seasix:

Chit man. You had it easy. Mom's W.O.C. here was the Willow switch. She always had them handy. She needed them.... :leaving:
hmmm....i should cross market these as cooking spoons and child control sticks..... and this pair is extra long, so you better get a head start on :ironchef:

Mc has found that one of my bamboo spoons is a great deterrent for Jc. She keeps it sitting on the coffee table and all she has to do is point at it and Jc and I both scoot closer to one another.
She has ninja skills with that spoon.

What are you using the cistern for?
What are you using the cistern for?
Catches rainwater off the roof. Have two, 2500 gal each. Use the water for plant watering, car washing, and backup for house use.
Great looking spoons DAB. That cutting board rocks. Looks like the new shop is being broken in well.

And the willow switch is evil. If it is cut green, it's limber enough to give you an extra "swat" when she quits. Of course, my mom was an opportunist. Her W.O.C. was whatever was handy.....but she did love her willows.
And DAB, those spoons are awesome. I do a little baking from time to time and love my wooden spoons, although mine are functional, not works of art like those.
spoons are a gift for someone. a surprise!!:dance:
