Washington (CNN)The House easily passed a bill Thursday that would suspend the program allowing Syrian and Iraqi refugees into the U.S. until key national security agencies certify they don't pose a security risk.

The vote was 289-137, with 47 Democrats joining 242 Republicans in favor of the bill, creating a majority that could override President Barack Obama's promised veto. Nancy Pelosi voted in favor of the law. (Although 290 votes is normally need to override a veto, John Boehner's seat is vacant.)

Republicans were determined to move quickly. House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters "this is urgent. We cannot and should not wait to act, not when our national security is at stake."

The administration's veto threat "baffles me," Ryan said, "especially given the fact that his own law enforcement top officials came to Congress and testified that there are gaps in this refugee program."

Too bad it has virtually no chance of getting through the Senate.

Too bad it has virtually no chance of getting through the Senate.

Maybe, maybe no. Republicans hold 54 seats, Democrats hold 44 seats, with 2 Independents who vote with Democrats. Republicans need 13 votes to override a veto. The answer depends upon how suicidal the Democrat/Independent Senators are. I think it's a given that some of the refugees will commit terrorism here. Are these Senators willing to place their jobs on the line with that reality?

About time.

Ah. So we're gonna step up the vetting process! How does this work? Check their credit history with Experion? Maybe find out if they're paying their Netflix subscription on time? How about snooping into their iTunes account to see what kind of music they download!

How exactly do you vet a bunch of doucherags riding around on Camels?

Some are certainly stupid enough to do so. I expect we will see about the same percentage of votes out of the Senate. If that happens, that rabid POS POTUS will come up with some other plan to tear this county apart before the holiday break comes up. Count on it.

You don't. Which would effectively kill his plans for this. :cert:

If Reid gets his way, it will never come up for a vote.

It is unclear when the Senate will take up the measure, but Reid on Thursday said Democrats will attempt to block it.

"We've explained here in some detail. The problem is not with refugees," Reid said when asked if Democrats could support the House bill. "I don't think we will be dealing with it over here."

Reid's language suggests Democrats will use the power of their 46 seats to block the House bill from getting the 60 votes it would need to clear procedural hurdles in the Senate.

tonight, on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, and from the Democrat leaders... "only racist, bigoted, global warming denying, homophobes voted for it."

It's a worthless bill anyway. If you are a Syrian or Iraqi and want to be eligible for emigration, all you need to do is go to Turkey or Jordan or any other country first. Pretty much ever single Syrian that has came to the USA recently hasn't came directly from Syria. Probably bordering on 100%.

At the very least we could ensure their documents are at least real.

What documents? I hear everyone talking about vetting the folks. There isn't ever going to be a true vetting. You and I plus a few others know about an SF-86. Who's going to verify the info? How? And in Syria/Iraq/Afghanistan/etc even if you get info, is it true. Are the supplied documents even real. The vetting of those folks is just laughable imo.

They're not giving them clearances, they're making sure passports, etc all line up.

They shouldn't be getting in without a passport IMO.

Again, in those countries as well as many others around the world, are those passports real. I'd rather keep a person out than just admit someone with documents that who knows if they are real at this time and from that area.

Also, as far as just a passport, there are cells now with the proper looking passport.

A British guy went to Syria and paid $2000 to get a fake Syrian passport, drivers licence, and ID card as part of an investigative reporting story. After reading the story, a German security specialist asked to look at these documents. The drivers license and ID card didn't hold up to scrutiny, but the passport was a perfect forgery, probably because ISIS controls many government buildings that had the raw materials for these passports. It would be trivial for ISIS to make really good passports for their operatives. There'd be no way of telling them from legitimate ones. No way at all. And they could make "real" driver's licenses and ID cards too.

I would say the proof for the US would be an attack here. But that train has already left the station. And it's currently picking up speed.
