View Full Version : Nice day for a cruise

.....and so cruise it is. Today's destination, that thriving metropolish of Hatch, NM. Why Hatch, NM? Well....it's the chile capital of the world (http://www.hatchchilefest.com/), of course! And we've been dying to try Sparky's Burgers (http://www.sparkysburgers.com/), as featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Supposed to be the best Green Chile Cheeseburger anywhere..... Hatch is about 80 miles north of El Paso straight up I-25, or NM highway 28.

This was a last minute "hey, let's go somewhere" kinda deal, so only a couple of us went. Everyone else had meaningless crap to do.....like work or family obligations.....they must work on getting their priorities straight. And to think....I managed to get a C5 owner to go.....The humility! :hurray:

So here we are arriving in Hatch....

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/1058/hatchfeb2011001.jpg

.......and at Sparky's. Yep, this looks like a dive alright. Food should be delicious.

http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/2374/hatchfeb2011002.jpg

There are a large group of bikers here.....sounds like our kinda place. A real hole in the wall....complete with Ronald McDonald, Colenol Sanders sitting on the bench, Yogi Bear across the street, Bob's Big Boy on the roof....and a huge Blake's Lotta Burger guy with a green chile in his hand.

http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/1148/hatchfeb2011003.jpg

Only in NM. I'm surprised they haven't been sued for trademark infringement 100 times now. Maybe Guy Fieri is protecting them....

At any rate, the GC Cheeseburger was one of the best I've ever had.....seriously. After grubbing, we headed next door where they had another dining room with live entertainment......a guy named Iya Khan that played a great lead guitar. We wound up listening to his entire set and buying a couple of his CD's....

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/7913/hatchfeb2011004.jpg

Talked to him after the set....a really cool guy from Detroit of all places now living in "Middlanowhere, NM". Guy played a mean axe.

So....Lunch and a show....time to head home....parting shot of the dive...

http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/4002/hatchfeb2011005.jpg

But WAIT! We need more pics of the cars! So let it be done.....

http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/5597/hatchfeb2011006.jpg

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/4020/hatchfeb2011008.jpg

And as we're snapping pics, who do we run into but Iya? And we got him to pose for a pic by the cars with his guitar.

http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/7480/hatchfeb2011007.jpg

OK, time for the trip home.....but one more photo op, in front of Hot Damm Chile Roasters!

http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/1035/hatchfeb2011012.jpg

With that done, it's back home.

All in all, a very fun day, and a new greasy spoon with fantastic Green Chile Cheeseburgers. Cruising Season 2011 has officially kicked off gents.

They are in ABQ, and there is one in Alamogordo, NM....75 miles north of here. I have no idea where this one is stolen from

Sounds like a fun cruise. We finally got to drive today even if it was just to Shawnee for a steak. I lived in Odessa, Tx for 15 yrs and have family in Tucson so I traveled I20 and I10 through El Paso, Las Cruces, Deming, etc. I always saw the Hatch turn off while going through Las Cruces but never had a reason to go that way.

Just read the other thread, talk about a train wreck. How does a discussion about a cruise devolve into that? In a couple of weeks we should start seeing decent weather also and be able to go for a joyride.

I was a Teamster for 26 years, worked for UPS. You never see UPS men standing around, there always moving getting the job done.. I do have to agree with you about some of the Union workers..They take advantage of companys because of being in the Union. I can't speak for them, but I do know if you don't do your job at UPS you won't be there long...:D..WW

And, as Forrest Gump said.. "That's all I have to say about that"...

Thanks for asking and welcome to the Jon Hekking Institute of Higher Education's course; UNIONS 101

In preparation for today's lecture, please refer to the chart below;

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg117/81vette4me/union.jpg

So, let's discuss what this chart is telling us. You will see that union membership has dropped from a high of 32% in 1948 to an all time low of 11.9% of total US workers in 2010. That number is projected to be at approx 9% by the end of 2011. What does this tell us?

Well, if you ask a union leader they will tell you it's the result of the employer's attempt to break the unions and making it more difficult for an employee to become a union member. Is this the reality? No, it certainly is not. The reality is that the majority of the 20% of jobs that have been lost by union members NO LONGER EXIST IN THE US period. These jobs were with companies that have either closed shop or sent their jobs to Mexico and China so they can still compete in the world market. It is almost impossible to manufacture any goods in the US and remain profitable and competitive due to US labor costs as driven up by the unions.

You may ask "what about GM, they have a union and have become profitable again". This is true, but at who's expense? The lovely Mrs. JH works for a company that tracks profitability statements for dealerships as well as conducts profitability clinics. Ask your local Chevrolet, Caddy, GMC, Buick, Oldsmobile (oops, never mind), Pontiac (again forget that one), Saturn (yea them too) or Hummer (egads, them too) dealership how much they make these days. GM has become profitable by taking margin away from their dealers and dumping manufacturing expenses by closing divisions, the unions have contributed nothing and in fact their members are still earning severance from all those closed divisions along with huge pensions that the general public will never see. Also, now that GM is making a profit, how long do you think it will be before the unions demand ANOTHER wage increase to get their share? Keep in mind that the average hourly wage at GM is $72 per hour compared to $41 per hour at Honda, Toyota, and Ford US plants. How long will GM stay profitable with numbers like these?

There will always be a place for unions in jobs that involve public safety and high risk such as law enforcement, fire fighting and pilots. However, the days of organized union labor in manufacturing in the US are long gone. You don't need a degree in Economics as I have to see that.

This concludes our lecture for today. For transcripts, please send $10, US dollars only, no Barn Bucks or Canadian currency. PM me for the address.
