View Full Version : My first apartment wasn't this big
Wife and I are getting a new dog the first week of December, started getting the house set up for him.
Little big for him now, but he'll grow into it.

Years ago we had a Samoyed/ Golden Retreiver mix. It used to look like here were tumbleweeds rolling through our house. A guy at work, his wife had a loom and I would bring trashbags full of hair in for them

Those dogs look like they have seen better days. Fortunately their 4-legged companions look to be in better shape.

Doesn't matter how big they get, it's still "their spot" :yesnod:

Congrats on the Newfi. They are great dogs but they do shed.
Just another gentle giant breed. ( unless you mess with their owners then all bets are off :yesnod: )
Oh, by the way. That nice big dog crate makes a great cooling rack for cooking :yesnod:

I've been researching the breed for a couple of years now, me with owners, worked closely with the breeder, I think I'm ready for the upkeep aspects.
As far as taking care of owners...that's the primary reason we went with a male. I like the idea of a 160lbs bodyguard for my wife when I'm not home. :seasix:

Here's Levi, our Greater Swiss Mountain dog last year when he was about 135 lbs at just under 2 years old. ( I'm just under 6' and 220 lbs)

One bit of advice. Keep an eye on these guys after food and water intake. Bloat is a real problem.
Also, find out if your breeder has a CHIC # for the Sire and Dam.

One of my niece's had a newfie. Back when she lived in Denver I went out to see her. We drove from there out to Vegas for the big millennium bash with the dog in the back of her SUV. He was not cooperating in the going to the bathroom thing the whole trip. 9+ hours. When we got to her dad's place in Vegas, we let him out in the back yard. He cut loose. Oh. My. God. She had to get a second grocery bag from dad to finish the clean up. He was only about 9 months old at the time and weighed 160lbs. I have pictures of him around here somewhere when he was around 4 years old. Then 220 lbs. of fur and slobber. :Jeff '79:

Speaking of slobber jaws.. I wonder if that is a mattress for the dog in the cage or a sponge.

Newfs are cool dogs. Big personalities. Just hope your pup doesn't slobber too much. Cheyenne used to drink and then try to rub off excess slobber/water on you. :ack: She was with us for 12 years.

We're ready for the drool. Both parents didn't seem to drool that much so I think we'll be ok. Breeder has a good bloodline, several over her dogs are 14+ years old.
Just got the call, get to go see him for the first time tomorrow.

You're going to have lots of fun. Get ready for the "I have no idea what you want from me, except that I do and would just rather choose to pretend that you are non-existant." look. :D

I'm ready for just about anything, he will be trained very well though. A 150 lbs dog that doesn't listen can be dangerous.

Probably won't. You can breed two giants and end up with a litter of small dogs.

My niece thought that too. Her "puppy" topped out at 240 lbs. None of it was fat. Great dog though. Just didn't want to get between him and a wall as he would come up and lean on you to get petted. :Jeff '79:
