View Full Version : Two years ago today
Island14 and many others were greatly affected by typhoon Yolanda.
I still find it hard to believe how massive that storm was or even what they went through at the time when it passed over his island.

Thanks for remembering Rob.
:cert:
It was certainly a day and a time in our life for the many months later of rebuilding that I will never forget.. :yesnod:
There were some things on TV here about it today also.
Some photos from during and after the storm that day for the new members here that did not see them.

The Dude posted a link to the news story where I found this photo below of our village from above.
Our house is just to the left side bottom of this photo (not Shown)
I remember seeing the plane fly over and thought to myself at the time that I bet they were taking photos.

I was just looking through some of the photos from the link above.
In just this photo here there should have been 4 different homes shown, but as you can see there was not much of them left.
They were right next door to our house...

And a few more pics from that day..
My buddy Dino dragging out the chest of his kids cloths from what was left of their hut.

All of the crashed homes in the pics above were never rebuilt, even the concrete store/house in the bottom 2 photos that at least still had walls was demolished.
That whole area is now just a big field with a few tress left that were not uprooted or broken in half by the winds.
All the broken and fallen trees were cut into lumber.
About 50 family's that lived on that piece of property all re-located.
So from our property all the way down to the pier is empty and no one is left there now except one old guy who I let build a small hut at the corner of our lot up by the beach.
Most of them, but not all.. moved to a small area and have 20X20 foot lots they built on, and of course most all of them built as large as they could so not much room between them.
Very crowded, if one house would ever catch fire they would all go..
I will get some pics though.

I don't know what is worse, Storm, fire, earthquake or flood.
This was September less than five miles from my house-

I really didn't see anyone crying about it, and think they were all just happy to be alive.
I myself was happy we still had a house with walls, and needing a whole new room seemed so small in comparison to others that lost everything.
The evening after the storm we had quite a few people staying here at our house, myself and my family moved into our guest house for about a month while getting a new roof on.
Even Erning drank Rhum with us that night, and he never drinks, ever!
He was just happy to be alive and celebrating life I think.
The very next day many people were already making temporary homes from the scraps and debris that was left, and a few weeks later many were given tents to stay in till they could rebuild.
When I think back now it was an interesting time.. but I wouldn't want to have to go through it again.

You were very lucky that it missed you, that was too dang close!
Just one shift of the wind and you may have also lost your home. :yesnod:
We were lucky here and had no one get killed in our village other than one older woman who had a heart attack during the storm.
I read somewhere that about 36 people did die that day here on our island though, which in perspective was not as bad as Tacloban and Leyte that took the storm surge.
Over 8000 people died that day.. :sadangel:
