I've heard the "social activities" are quite varied, and entertaining....

The best time to visit Punta Cana is from March to May, when the peak season rush trickles out of the city. Luckily, the weather is warm year-round, with average highs around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. But keep in mind: The Dominican Republic experiences some of the effects of the Atlantic hurricane season, which lasts from June to November. And Punta Cana in particular has been known to face severe tropical storms, seeing an average of about 40 inches of rainfall each year. Still, this area stays crowded no matter the season.
the amount of tourists isn't the really important factor in the above quote, it's the rainfall. During the rainy season the ground water rises and intermixes with the cess pools alot of resorts use as septic tanks. When they meet underground the well water becomes loaded with bacteria, you get the D.R. two step. :ack:
And if you think you can avoid it by drinking bottled water, just think about what your salad is washed in, and what your ice cubes are made from. April is the perfect time to go. have a great time.

I enjoy it. Stayed at the Hotel Paradisus Punta Cana, I believe. I took a fishing trip, but we stayed at the resort mostly. My wife's family is from the DR and I've travelled all over the country and never had a problem. Watch Anthony Bourdains's episode there. I had her parents take us to all those places a year ago. Her Mom really hated the pig place :)

A coworker of mine went there this year and said it was fantastic. He is already planning on going back. He said the resort areas were off the chain, but pretty much outside them is poor/slum type places.

Right on!
Be aware they use a LOT of motorcycles for transportation there like many 3-4 world countries, and many/most of the operators are intensely training to be Kamikaze pilots. Be very careful when walking around traffic.
