Burbank man, 20, ejected from car lands on 5 Freeway sign in Glendale

Authorities removed the body of a 20-year-old Burbank man from a 5 Freeway sign Friday morning in Glendale after the driver lost control of his car and was ejected.

California Highway Patrol received a call at 7 a.m. about the driver of a Ford Fiesta traveling recklessly down the southbound 5 Freeway just north of California 134. Shortly after, the car collided with another car, overturned and the driver was ejected, landing on the Colorado Street freeway sign, said Edgar Figueroa, a CHP public information officer.

The driver, Richard Pananian, was not wearing a seatbelt and died, Figueroa said. The Los Angeles Fire Department assisted in removing the body from the sign.

"I've never seen anything like this or heard anything like this," Figueroa said. "It's the first time."

Officials had closed both northbound and southbound lanes on the 5, but most have since reopened. The three and four lanes on the southbound side remain closed for the investigation.

Driver Who Landed on 5 Freeway Sign After Fatal Crash Was Passing on Shoulder: CHP

A 20-year-old Burbank man whose body landed on an overhead exit ramp sign after a rollover crash near Griffith Park was passing vehicles on the right shoulder of the 5 Freeway before veering out of control, CHP announced Friday afternoon.

The collision occurred just before 7 a.m. on the southbound freeway just north of the eastbound 134 Freeway overpass

Richard Pananian of Burbank was killed, according to Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

A witness told the California Highway Patrol that Pananian was driving his 2004 Ford Fiesta at a high rate of speed and passing vehicles on the right shoulder.

The 45-year-old driver of a 2004 Ford F-150 was in the No. 4 lane going 50 mph when Pananian veered left from the right-hand shoulder and hit the pickup truck’s rear, according to a CHP collision report.

The Fiesta then veered right, out of control, and overturned multiple times. As the Fiesta traveled up an embankment, Pananian was ejected about 20 feet into the air, colliding with an exit ramp sign overhead, the report stated.

Pananian came to rest on the “ledge” in front of the sign. His severely damaged Fiesta rolled back onto the freeway.

"Based on the injuries sustained and force of impact" with the F-150, it wasn’t clear exactly what killed Pananian, the CHP report stated.

He was pronounced dead by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.

The F-150 driver, who had two passengers in his truck, was not injured, nor were his passengers.

It appeared Pananian was not wearing a seat belt, according to CHP.

Pananian's body was covered with a sheet after firefighters ascended a ladder and worked to remove the body in the 9 a.m. hour.

He had landed on a sign alerting drivers to the Colorado Street exit, three-quarters of a mile away.

All southbound and northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway were temporarily blocked, and the two southbound right lanes were closed for an extended period.

All lanes reopened about 11 a.m., CHP's Southern Division stated on Twitter.

The incident happened in the Griffith Park area, bordering on the northern section of the Atwater Village neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Sounds like the car was flipping and he was thrown out with the momentum. Must've been one of the side windows, as it looks like the windshield is still intact.

I came upon a scene this summer where a guy in a pickup hydroplaned doing 70 MPH, crossed over a grassy median, flipped, was ejected, and crushed by his own vehicle. Yup, not wearing a seat belt. The cab of his truck was intact, he would have survived without any major injuries.

It looks like this guy would've survived, as well, had he been wearing his seatbelt.

That stretch of the 5 is by Griffith Park on a downhill slope. At 7:00, it's very congested. Usually just crawling. He must've been on the right shoulder flying by traffic that was either crawling or at a standstill. No smart, as he found out.

:iagree: I'd say, the door flew open on impact and he was being flung around in that car like a ragdoll. Seatbelts rock.:cert:

True. He won't be trying that again. Lesson learned.

Family Performed Lamb Sacrifice for Burbank Man Days Before He Was Ejected Onto 5 Freeway Sign

A relative performed a lamb sacrifice to protect a 20-year-old man from harm and evil just days before his body landed on a 5 Freeway sign after being ejected in a fatal car crash in Glendale, according to a fundraising page set up for him.

Richard Pananian died on Friday morning. He was allegedly driving his 2004 Ford Fiesta at a high rate of speed and passing vehicles on the freeway’s right shoulder when his car hit the rear of a truck and veered out of control, the California Highway Patrol said at the time.

The Fiesta then overturned and rolled over multiple times.

As the car went up an embankment, Pananian was ejected about 20 feet into the air. His body landed on the Colorado Street exit ramp sign overhead

He appeared to not be wearing a seat belt at the time, according to a CHP official.

In the GoFundMe page, a cousin revealed that just days before his death, a lamb sacrifice had been performed to protect the young Burbank man.

“A week ago today on 10/25 the family had done what is called a ‘matag’ or a lamb sacrifice for Richard to protect him from harm and evil,” Armen Kardashian wrote in the post. “In the Armenian culture sacrifices are done when someone escapes death, as Richards life was once spared.”

He did not delve further or provide any additional information about how exactly the young man’s life had been previously spared.

Kardashian then continued: “I find it ironic that 5 days after this offering to God, not only did God choose to take this young mans life, but decided to make such a spectacle out of it.”

Pananian was described by his cousin as being exceptionally friendly, giving and compassionate, and having “a beautiful soul.”

“He loved to work on, with, around cars, was never afraid to get his hands dirty. He was a type of person that would remember you, and call you to say hey I hope you’re having a good day. Completely selfless and gave to others before taking himself,” Kardashian stated in the post.

He also recalled his cousin always wore a 5-point harness whenever in a car, and never needed to be reminded about it.

Pananian’s family is seeking to raise $50,000 to remove “any financial burden this family is facing during these traumatic times.”

In addition to funeral expenses, the money would go toward a memorial and any cost related to damages, the post stated.

Don't get me wrong, I am not opposed to eating lamb, but I did not find their reason meaningful.

Now, the question has to be asked, will they continue to keep sacrificing since it worked so well. :waiting:
