Purdue! :hurray:

She's going to likely get admitted to every one she applies to, so scholarship money is going to talk, and BS...well, you know, but Purdue is extremely strong in automotive mechanical engineering. :yesnod:

For an engineering degree, you can't do much better that the Boilermakers. Congrats to your daughter!

Purdue has automatic scholarships for incoming freshman based on merit, but I'm reading on their site now...she's eligible for $12-16K per year. Has to apply by Feb. 1st.

little free advice:

find some local engineering firms, ask if she can visit them for a day or week, to observe the actual business of engineering. what they show on the ads is not what really happens all the time. some work is dreadfully boring.

Early admissions and scholarship offers contain "hidden" stipulations. Ensure you confirm in writing exact dates, requirements, etc., especially for acceptances from schools she is really interested in attending.

Congratulations!

Congratulations. Make sure she minors I. Business. Once most ME get to their mid 30s they max out income potential unless they can manage others.

I saw it my whole career. EE and ME always have a job but never rise above the new guys too much unless they move up to management.

I went unemployed more than once for extended periods. 6-18 months.

Be prepared to move. A lot.

We visited Clemson, and she did not like it. FSAE team was very unprofessional and even late to the appointment.

Another Boilermaker here. Congrats! Best decision I ever made was heading to West Lafayette. Great campus, great... everything (except maybe football these days).

FSAE is good, but I'm sure you guys have done enough research to know about the single most awesome college tradition ever...

She's definitely a leader and would do just fine in management. :yesnod: Having said that, she'll always want to have her hands dirty. I could see her on the Corvette development team. :yesnod:

I'll be sure to send them an email letting them know what kind of top-notch talent they'll be missing out on if they keep up this kind of crap. :kick:

They weren't just late...they forgot. :sadangel:

Lots of schools have football, basketball, and whatever.

Purdue's biggest event of each school year is... RACING. Grand Prix week is a blast whether you're driving or not. Unfortunately as a broke ass college kid donating plasma for beer money, I was never able to pull the funds together to get out there. As silly as it sounds, that honestly might be the biggest regret I have. I priced it out so many times... wanted to every year. At the time the $$ it would have taken just seemed like a fortune.

Do you remember how much it might have been back then? When was back then?

I graduated in '04.

It was going to be a couple thousand to start from scratch and actually build something that would qualify.... seemed like a fortune at the time. It's basically a sprint kart with a cage. Most of the groups/frats/etc have either enough money or karts that can be used from year to year. There are also the "ringers" that are pretty obviously kart racers outside of the Grand Prix that are able to either build or modify something to spec.

The best answer I can give would be to call Fox Valley Karts in Lafayette. It's been a decade, but they always had a pretty good list of everything you would need.

Thanks for the head's up. For a kid who's done the STEM Solar Go Kart for 3 years, this would be a perfect segue for her into college. Obviously, Dad's gonna make sure she has the best sponsors and equipment. :D

This might be enough for Purdue to leapfrog the others in terms of interest for her. :yesnod:

As I said earlier... even with the Grand Prix aside, hands down the best decision I ever made.

Have you visited the campus yet?

Lots of good things happening on campus with new buildings, facilities, etc.

BTW, I just re-read the original post. I was also Mechanical Engineering-Automotive (Design).

I don't know if/what has changed over the last decade, but it was a FANTASTIC program that has served me very well even though I have never actually worked in the automotive industry. I ended up taking a significant number of Aero Eng classes along with the ME. Since there is a lot of wiggle room in the curriculum, I threw a lot of industrial design and even art classes in as well. It was nice to be able to tailor a program to essentially be exactly what I wanted it to be.

I've used it to design parts that I know people here use every day in GE appliances and am currently using it to design things that go BOOM for our soldiers.

As a big bonus, and unknown to me at the time, I also learned a hell of a lot about how to build and set up a race car. Suspension and chassis geometry, how to build strong, safe parts/systems... I even got quite a bit of aero knowledge. It's amazing when things work exactly as you plan them to work rather than just taking a guess. :)

Take a page out of Ed Welburns life and send him a letter at GM. He did it when he was 7 years old. I am sure hundreds (even thousands) do the same thing now, but she should stand out to him. :seasix:

Former Mechanical Engineer here Craig ... I was not fortunate enough to go to a top school - there are some great ones out there, Purdue certainly near the top for Engineers.
