MAYFIELD, Ky. — Three Amish children were swept away and died when the horse-drawn buggy they were in overturned in a creek swollen by heavy rains. Meanwhile, authorities were searching for a fourth child Friday.
A married couple along with seven children were trying to cross the creek Thursday night on a roadway in southwestern Kentucky when the buggy overturned, knocking them into the water, Graves County Sheriff Dewayne Redmon told The Associated Press. The couple and three of the children escaped but four other children under age 12 were swept away.
The bodies of three of the children — including a 6-month-old — were found early Friday, Redmon said. Authorities continued searching for the fourth child, an 11-year-old girl, he said.
Law enforcers, firefighters and volunteers were taking part in the search Friday, Redmon said. Some were searching along the creek and others took to the water in boats.
Rescuers set up a headquarters at a church near the creek. Emergency management personnel from several counties, two swift water rescue teams and about 250 other volunteers showed up to help.
"We've been searching around the clock," Redmon said.
With the sun up and the water having gone down some, Redmon said searching should be easier Friday. People were holding out hope that the girl was still alive, he said.
"We're not going to give up until the end," he said.
The area is a sparsely populated farming community in far western Kentucky, about 25 miles south of Paducah.
Torrential rains drenched parts of Kentucky and other states Thursday night.

:sadangel::sadangel: for what happened, but why do people drive off into a swolen creek that had probably turned into a river. it's bad enough that people do it in cars in the dark much less a horse drawn buggy. What was this guy thinking?

Man rescued from car completely submerged in water

LOUISVILLE - A man was rescued from several feet of water, after his car became submerged in a canal estimated to be as deep as 12 feet by 50 feet across early Friday morning.
It all started around 1:00 Friday morning when the man was driving along Outer Loop at Grade Lane. That intersection comes to a T, which is where Grade Lane ends. However for one driver, that wasn't the case, as police say he continued on down Grade Lane, driving off the road and dodging barriers before his car ended up in the canal.
Police, paramedics, and the dive team were all called to the scene. The man made it out of his car a short time later, and reportedly told police there was someone else in the car with him. While dive teams went to work in the cold water, police were able to later determine that the man was believed to be alone.
The driver of the car was taken to University Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. His car, is still in the water where it is completely submerged.
"Due to the hazardous conditions, we'll come back and get the vehicle at a later time. Everyone is accounted for that was supposedly in the vehicle," Sgt. Dave Minniar with the LMPD Dive Team told WAVE 3 News.
That's because divers had troubles trying to get the vehicle out of the water their first time around.
"We had divers go in and try to hook up the vehicle, but the current was taking them under the vehicle. If there were people in the vehicle, we'd pull it out but its been determined that no ones in the vehicle, so what's why we are going to wait," Sgt. Minniar said.
Once Simpson is released from the hospital, he'll likely go to jail. That's because police don't believe water was the only liquid involved; they believe Simpson had been drinking and driving when he drove into the canal.
Officials say the canal's water level was higher at the time Simpson drove into it because of the recent high amount of rain that has fallen.
And, on a related tangent......

I like the Amish. They're a great example not only of practicing what you preach, but not pushing your religion on others. I admire them for these, among other reasons.

Unfortunately, it appears that the Amish aren't very responsible when it comes to street racing.
Buffalo, NY - 3 Amish men charged in buggy race, crash
Three young Amish men have been charged in a late-night buggy race in the Town of Leon in which a collision with a fourth buggy left a horse dead. The charges were announced Sunday after a weeklong investigation of the May 19 accident by the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Department. Deputies were called to the scene after a dead horse and smashed buggy were found in a ditch on Riga Road last Monday.
Deputies said the three men from Leon were racing their buggies south on Riga Road at 11 p.m. when they crested a knoll and encountered a northbound buggy driven by Eli D. Miller, 17, of Napoli. The unsuspecting Miller collided with the horse and buggy driven by Jacob E. Wengerd, 17, of Route 62, deputies said. Wengerd's horse was killed, and Miller's horse suffered cuts to its legs and chest, deputies added.
Wengerd was charged with cruelty to an animal, taking part in an unlawful speed contest, unsafe passing and failure to keep right.
The other two buggies were driven by Wengerd's brother, Andy E., 18, and Joseph R. Miller, 20, of Riga Road, according to deputies. Both men were charged with taking part in an unlawful speed contest.
No injuries were reported. The three defendants must appear in Leon Town Court on June 5.
