View Full Version : You're Fired (but still on call 2 years for no pay).
Link to article (http://www.computerworld.com/article/2994787/it-careers/bank-s-severance-deal-requires-it-workers-to-be-on-call-for-two-years.html)SunTrust Banks in Atlanta is laying off about 100 IT employees as it moves work offshore. But this layoff is unusual for what the employer is asking of its soon-to-be displaced workers: SunTrust's severance agreement requires terminated employees to remain available for two years to provide help if needed, including in-person assistance, and to do so without compensation.
Many of the affected IT employees, who are now training their replacements, have years of experience and provide the highest levels of technical support. The proof of their ability may be in the severance requirement, which gives the bank a way to tap their expertise long after their departure.

That would have to be one hell of a severance package if they expect to be able to reach out and require your physical presence up to two years later. I would be willing to bet courts would not support it as reasonable just like a lot of non compete agreements get kicked to the curb

So they have I T folks training their offshore replacements. What do you think the odds are that a few lines of code get inserted that may not end up being destructive but highly embarrassing to Sun Trust.

Willing to bet there is a less valuable option available to those that don't like the call option.
We are in the process of moving all of our third party apps to the cloud (aws) and doing some investigation on what it would take to move our databases up there as well.
It does make sense to reduce the footprint here on campus and have much better scalability as well as DR architecture. Security is the biggest concern but I see other schools doing it and we have started to reach out to them for their experience and feel about security.
I feel most organizations will go that way soon. Heck, even Dell can see it happening and that is why they bought EMC just recently.

In soon to be news, SunTrust Banks in Atlanta has reported a massive data breach with private account data from thousands of their clients compromised, along with a number of reported "suspicious" account transfers. SunTrust has assured their clients they hold their privacy as their highest priority, and are taking steps to safeguard their clients information.
Combine that with two years of unemployment and you've got a pretty sweet deal...if you're already a loser...

That's like getting a kick in the ass after a slap in the face!
I'll bet they aren't getting all of their severance package money all at once. It must be spread out over the next two years, or why would anyone in their right mind put up with it? :slap:

That'd be my response. But then, I don't expect a severance package when I leave a company. You wanna give me one, fine. But you have nothing to hold over my head.

Dell bought EMC because the PC market has bottomed out and makes no money. Dell had to do something to compete with HP an IBM and buying EMC was it. Nothing visionary about the deal, just Michael Dell doing business to keep his company alive.

That's how my wife's company handles it, severence is paid out in biweekly pay checks, that means the person stays on the payroll and is available if needed plus it means no unemployment claims. As a company the other advantage is that if person finds employment either inside or outside the company, the severence ends so money saved.

that's a tough one alright. With what recently happened with Disney... you are either fired immediately - or can stay on for a little while (while training your green-card replacements).
If one has a family; hanging onto health benefits for as long as possible may cause you to put-up with some of this schit; when in reality you'd prefer to just..

One could only hope.
I would never, EVER train my replacement after being told my services were no longer required.
" Mike, we will be letting you go but would like you to train Mr Patel over there to do your job..Oh and you will have to be available for two years at no pay as a consultant to be eligible for any severance"
