Second iPad Unveiling Set For March 2
Apple is planning a March 2 event to unveil the second edition of the iPad, the Wall Street Journal's All Things D blog reported Tuesday.

According to All Things D's Kara Swisher, the iPad will be unveiled in San Francisco next Wednesday. It is unknown what the device will be called, when it will go on sale, or whether Steve Jobs will appear at the event.

The report came after a series of media reports out of Taiwan earlier in the day stating that the iPad was facing a production delay. However, Reuters later reported that those reports were erroneous.

Consumer Confidence Numbers Mixed
Consumer confidence in both technology and the economy as a whole dropped in February, according to numbers released Wednesday by the Consumer Electronics Association. CEA's number, however, was contradicted by the Conference Board, which reported Wednesday that consumer confidence had reached a three-year high.

The CEA Index of Consumer Expectations (ICE) ended six straight months of upward movement, dropping to 172 from its 35-month high last month. The CEA Index of Consumer Technology Expectations (ICTE), meanwhile, dropped to 76.2, a ten-month low.

The Conference Board, however, reported that confidence had reached 70.4, its highest level since February of 2008.

“Consumers indicated they will spend less on consumer electronics, which is typically muted in the first quarter of every year,” CEA economist Shawn DuBravac said in a statement. “Some of the decline in sentiment is related to consumers anticipating new product launches that happen in March for many key products.”

The Nintendo 3DS, the Motorola Xoom tablet and several smartphone launches are scheduled for late February and March, while Apple is expected to announce a new iPad next week.
