View Full Version : ~~~3.90 Gears~~~
The only one thing I did not mess with it, it's now a "must do". There is play on the driver's side yoke and it has to be fixed. If I dont fix it, it will start leaking gear oil and on the long run I'll have to do it anyways. I figure if it has to be fixed, this is the time for me to upgrade. Its a 3.45 from factory, the 4.10 I read many different opinions and a 3.73 is only 0.28 difference. I figure a 3.90 would give me a change like the the 3.07 gives to the 2.59 on the automatics transmission. My 92 was a 2.59 but, my 95 is a 3.07 and the second I stepped on it I knew there was something different and once I got on the freeway I confirmed it.
I think the 3.90 would eliminate some of the Magnaflow drone I get on the freeway.
I already removed most of the suspension components to remove the trailing arms and knuckle. Today I removed the exhaust, emergency cable, disconnected the driveshaft's U-joint and removed the C-Beam's bolts. Thanks to the ZFDoc's plates that was easy.
I got the whole assembly off, I got no idea how the
heck I'll put back in there b ut, I'll let you guys know.

I'll leave there hanging until I get paid in few days. :D
This part received an enourmous amount of abuse and I was able to pick it up
with my hands. I can't do that with the ZF transmission.

If you're going from 3:45 to 3:90 I would think the drone would be worse because of the higher rpm. I'm really surprised drone is a problem with the Magnaflows since they are the ones I found to have the least drone. However, my mufflers are universals and not Vette specific but I fail to see what diff that would make. Good Luck!

No, you see at 2,000 RPMS it quiets down. At 2,000 RPMS the 3.45 do 89 MPH normally I drive 75-80. The 3.90 will put me at 78 MPH, the 3.73 would put me at 82 MPH.
I'll make a decision tonight while I watch Any Given Sunday for the 253rd time nut, I feel string about 3.90s. Now, if this drone stay as bad it is, I'll consider about removing the Magnaflow. It does sound bitchen. Ask the 69 Camaro guy at the gas station last time I drove it. He though he was loud...or louder...:beat:

On my 94 I have the resonators removed, an X pipe, and Magnaflow mufflers. It sounds great, but there is a drone about 1900-2000 rpm. The gears are stock 3.07. I calculated that going with 3.90 will move the drone past my “average” :D cruising speed, and provide a little kick in the pants to boot.
:drivingskid:
Next on the C4 list – gears.

Heck, thanks, I forgot. My 95 has the same system but, no X Pipe. I have no drone in it. The mufflers in my 95 are Magnaflow but are the SS Muflers, the 95 has the MPE. I'd say the mufflers are making all this difference. Another difference, the 95 is a stock LT1.

I went with 3.90's on my 69 Camaro with a 3 spd auto...I went from 3.08's to start so it was a huge change. You won't have to buy a new carrier with the 3.90- they use a thicker ring gear to reach the smaller tooth count pinion, right?
maybe weaker, but I used to run 11's on the bottle and my 12 bolt with the 3.90's took it in stride. otherwise you have to buy a lot more parts.
The Dana 44 carrier supports the 3.90. Yes, I got to buy the bearings and all the other "rebuild parts".
The differential is at the shop, it would be ready by Wed or Thursday.

At least it will be done by March. I had to order injectors for my new ride, which isn't a big deal, but it will probably take 10 days to get it running because I'm gonna port the injector housings and plenum.
There's 25-30 free hp with that mod on the LT5 so I have to do it.
I dont know if it will be done for the Bomber Run. I'm already planning on taking the DRM. The axle will be done but, this cold do not motivate me to get in the garage and start wrenching. Wrenching is an art, it got to be done with love and passion.
I drove the DRM to San Diego and back on Thursday and the suspension on that one is at least half com paring to the coilovers in the Silver. I think I have to loosen it up. Harsh driving keep breaking this thing, I have to come down this axle thing is costing me around $900 bones.
I did some photochopping and next tires for my DRM will be 285/35ZR18 that is the same diameter as the stock size (285/40ZR17) and it will look better. The cheapest tires are $200+tax+certificates+ all the BS fees. It will be around $1,000 on tires. These things are money pits, Since 97 I've been drilling this mine. My DD has 197,000 miles and the sucker still runs.

well, I got the wrong damn injectors in the mail...it was a box mix-up. There is somebody in Tennessee with 16 LT5 injectors he's probably scratching his head about.
I don't need them yet, but I don't like to start projects until I got the parts Iin front of me, but it will come apart tomorrow because I probably have a week after work to do the grinding and porting on the injector housings/plenum.
I still think I'll be ready by the 19th if the car runs right and other problems don't crop up. I'd like to take my C6 on a cruise, but it doesn't belong in the bomber run.
Ok Gents the 3.90 is finally home. Everything but, the pumpkin and batwing is NEW. The builder recommended me not to use synthetic gear oil. He highly recommended Lucas 85W140. Gave me instruction for a break in and to change the oil around 3,000 miles.
Today I ordered the heavy duty toe rods and poly bushings for the batwing.

Bryan, it still have play. Oh well now I know is safe and new. Lets call it "The Worry of Destiny" It was a legit excuse or reason to take it down and get it modded. :D

I'm green with envy,,,OK that was my one and only St. Patrick's day joke. The gears will be my next project.
Well, I poured oil in the diff today, I check later on and there is oil moisture at the bottom. I call that an oil leak. I opened the FSM and calls for 30 lbs ft and I find one bolt loose, loose without thread and that tells me the Fg ass-holes at the shop used an airgun to tighten the bolts. Which tells me that the inside and all other outer bolts are over-torqued.
I'm so FFFFF mad, you guys got no idea on how mad I am.

Damn Pete- that sucks. Wouldn't an airgun go way over 30lbs?

Oh yes easy. aluminum is strong but aluminum thread arent. You dont see aluminum torque going over 40 lbs ft.
My electrical impact gun goes up to 250 lbs ft and those are weaker that air guns.

Yes, I thought of that. Would it better going up to the next size?
I'm taking the batwing off and redoing everything by the FSM. I put the torque wrench at 45 lbs ft and it was clicking but, not loosing. All batwing bolts are over-torqued. I wonder and I bet all the axle components are the same way.
I got to buy some Gear Oil RTV or "The Right Stuff".

Heli coil would be better IMO.. you wont need to re size all the holes. Just heli coil the stripped one.

Just got back from NAPA with a helicoil kit, draining diff right now.

Let me show you guys the biggest rip off a shop can do to a man.
This is the differential as I started to disassembly it
to install the heli coil. You figure, a shop would clean things up to do everything right.
Look at the batwing bolts full of dirt, GM red RTV and the new black RTV.

temperature 66F. Imagine the nightmare at running speeds.

I guess you can thank the Tech for stripping your housing. You would have never know otherwise. :slap:
I rank proffesional mechanics right up there with lawyers and politicians. No offense if anyone is a lawyer or politician. I've seen so many people get ripped off by mecanics it makes me sick to think of having to use one that I don't know and trust. I know they're not all bad but how do you know when you're getting a good one or not. I'm glad you caught this one. Too often the ugly truth doesn't show itself until some time later and it's too late to go back on the shop who did the work and they get away with it.

My Diff is at the shop. This shop has Muscle Cars inside and outse and I call that a good sign.
It should be ready sometime this week. The gear was rubbing at the top of the casing. Those guys did a complete hack job. I'm lucky it was leaking oil and I opened it. Imagine me going at it, rev that thing to 6,000 RPMS and BOOOM!!

Wow. Whoever did that should be kicked square in the nuts. The piss poor work there is almost beyond words. Have you gotten your money back for it??? I would put those pictures and the name of that shop all over the place.
I do all of my own work although I admittedly do a lot of it with the help of one of the best high performance mechanics you'll find anywhere. He helped me with the rear end rebuild quite a bit.
Here is the thread about my Dana rebuild.

Here is the car that my friend drives (his dad is the owner and the mechanic that helps me from time to time). I repay the favor as much as I can by traveling with them and doing a lot of the work on the car at the track.

Damn Pete, in every job there are different degrees of quality, and nearly every time opinions will also differ. But on this job I don't think quality was even brought up. Good luck with the CC dispute.

I'm actually looking forward to your opinion of running gears in your car. I may have the opportunity in the coming months to buy either a 3.90 or 4.10 D44 out of another vette that is going solid axle for drag racing.
It would be for the LT5 which would probably really like gears.

Not trying to make your mind for you but, many people with the 4.10 like it but, they always have a comment after that. Thats why I bought the 3.90 (3.9094 :D).
This shop screw up was not part of the plan.
All you need is the hardware, torque wrench, 15mm wrench, 15mm socket, 18mm socket and gear oil RTV.
