View Full Version : How forgiving are SIM cards?

I have a new phone arriving tomorrow, which takes the small nano sim size. Current phone has the (medium-size) micro sim.
Getting a new sim card from the carrier is of course plan B, but since I know they can be cut down in size, I picked up a sim cutting tool from Amazon, thinking that would be quicker/easier to get the new phone up and running without carrier assistance.

Since I had an old sim to experiment on, I tried cutting that. I noticed it fit kind of sloppy in the tool's slot, but gave it a shot, and the result was less than perfect:

I know the excess plastic on the top edge needs to be sanded off, but does anyone know if that left edge that slightly cut into the gold will be a problem? :island14:

I'll find out tomorrow I suppose.

Well. I did a similar thing on my last trip to the Philippines and it worked fine. I just took an old sim someone had and cut it down to fit my phone and then had to buy load. It worked fine but I did end up buying one that was made for my phone since it was only a dollar for a new one. Now I have a phone number I can send and receive calls over there now also

I am without clue. I had no idea they could be cut so I did learn that today. :seasix:

This is the tool I bought:
Amazon.com: Noosy 3rd generation Nano SIM card and Micro SIM card Cutter For iPhone 5, iPhone 4, 4S and other Phones: Cell Phones & Accessories@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41nxEWjw1tL.@@AMEPARAM@@41nxEWjw1tL

It works just like a hole punch for paper. It will cut a standard down to a micro, and/or a micro down to a nano.

In the past, I had a phone that took a standard sim, and I was able to use a micro sim in it, just by positioning it centered in the holder in the phone. Since that worked, I'm guessing there's a fair amount of wiggle room.

I realize it's kind of an obscure question few would know, I did search around a bit and didn't find much.

I did find this, which details the composition of the card, so now I'm thinking it will probably work ok.

Does that Sim card work over there? if so what a great way to save on texting to people here.

I do know that guys buy sim cards here, then leave, and when they come back again it no longer works.. as if they are not used at all for 90 days the number gets recycled.

Good question...I will test it this evening when I get home. Never thought about trying to use it here

Although....I have free texting to anyone over there anyway with my provider and phone calls are only .10 a minute

I was going to do that. But it took all of 5 min to walk into ATT and have them give me a new one.

I know our granddaughter took the sim card out of my wife's phone and put it in hers. It initialized and wiped out all of her pictures, videos, etc. :slap:

Took a little bit of sanding to fit nicely in the tray, but it works just fine. :cool1:
