While other television shows used made-for-TV music, Miami Vice would spend $10,000 or more per episode to buy the rights to original recordings.

Getting a song played on Miami Vice was a boost to record labels and artists.
In fact, some newspapers, such as USA Today, would let readers know the songs that would be featured each week. Among the many well-known bands and artists who contributed their music to the show were:
Roger Daltrey
El Debarge
Devo
Sinéad O'Connor
Russ Ballard
Black Uhuru
Jackson Browne
Kate Bush
Meat Loaf
Phil Collins
Bryan Adams
Tina Turner
Peter Gabriel
Pink Floyd
ZZ Top
The Tubes
Dire Straits
Depeche Mode
The Hooters
Iron Maiden
The Alan Parsons Project
The Ward Brothers
Godley & Creme
Corey Hart
Glenn Frey
U2
Underworld
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Propaganda
Foreigner
The Police
Red 7
Ted Nugent
Suicidal Tendencies
The Damned
Billy Idol.
Several artists even guest-starred in episodes, including Collins, Miles Davis, Power Station, Frey, Suicidal Tendencies, Willie Nelson, Nugent, Frank Zappa, The Fat Boys, Sheena Easton, and Gene Simmons. An iconic scene from the Miami Vice pilot involves Crockett and Tubbs driving through Miami at night to Phil Collins's song "In the Air Tonight".
Unlike standard police procedurals, the show drew heavily upon 1980s New Wave culture and music. The show became noted for its integration of music and visual effects. It is recognized as one of the most influential television series of all time. People magazine stated that Miami Vice was the "first show to look really new and different since color TV was invented".
As one of the show's directors, remarked, "The show is written for an MTV audience, which is more interested in images, emotions and energy than plot and character and words." These elements made the series into an instant hit, and in its first season saw an unprecedented fifteen Emmy Award nominations.
Nick Nolte and Jeff Bridges were considered for the role of Sonny Crockett, but it was not lucrative for film stars to venture into television at the time. Mickey Rourke was also considered for the role, but he turned down the offer. Larry Wilcox, of CHiPs, was also a candidate for the role of Crockett, but the producers felt that going from one police officer role to another would not be a good fit
For Johnson, who was by then 34 years old, NBC had particular doubts about the several earlier unsuccessful pilots in which he had starred. After two seasons, Johnson threatened to walk from the series as part of a highly publicized contract dispute. The network was ready to replace him with Mark Harmon, who had recently departed St. Elsewhere, but the network and Johnson were able to resolve their differences and he continued with the series until its end.
Two automobiles drew a lot of attention in Miami Vice, the Ferrari Daytona and Testarossa. During the first two seasons and two episodes of the third season, Detective Sonny Crockett drove a black 1972 Ferrari Daytona Spyder 365 GTS/4,a kit replica based on a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette C3 chassis.

Once the car gained notoriety, Ferrari Automobili filed a lawsuit. As a result, the vehicle lasted until season 2, at which point it was blown to pieces in the season three premiere episode, "When Irish Eyes Are Crying". The fake Ferraris were removed from the show, with Ferrari donating two brand new 1986 Testarossas as replacement.
Other notable vehicles that appeared in Miami Vice included, brands such as Lamborghini, AMG Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Maserati, Lotus, DeLorean, Porsche, and Corvettes. American muscle cars, such as the GTO, Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Plymouth GTX or a Plymouth Barracuda, Buick Grand National also made appearances.

A show I actually looked forward to seeing each week. An overseas assignment was kind of a bummer on my watching the show. However, as I look back now, I'd laugh even if someone offered me money not to take the assignment to Clark AB, Philippines. What a great place to be young and single. :D:cert::seasix:

interesting:
Besides the two real Testarossas, they used a replica for the stunts. This car was built by Roberts Motor Company, a company specialized in safety-oriented stunt cars for the movie industries. They bought a 1972 DeTomaso Pantera - a perfect car with 12000 miles on the odo and a value of $30,000 - and chopped it apart. The car was fitted with fiberglass panels made by Roberts (incl. a one-piece nose) and panels from a real but wrecked Testarossa. The chassis was modified and more important, the car was fitted with a 351cu Cleveland Ford engine, including a nitrous oxide system, producing 400 HP. In later episodes, they might have used a 420cu engine with nitrous, producing near 600 HP. As a "final touch" the car was also fitted with a second brake pedal, for only the rear brakes.

Johnny I often see you reminisce about your good ole days back here..
Can I ask why you don't just come back, and live here again like you use to? :island14:
Yeah I know we don't have a lot of this and that...
But sometimes.. less is more.. :yesnod:
For me I love it here, and can't think of anywhere I would rather be..

While I reminisce, I know things can never be like they were. I sure enjoyed my time being a GI at Clark. As for us moving back, the big thing holding the wife and I back is the medical care. Maybe we should just move back anyway.

I dunno.. for me maybe I just don't think that far ahead and maybe I should...
My wife has a medical card now from some congressman, that gives her and the kids some help if ever needed,
I keep asking her to ask about, and telling her to get signed up for Phil Health for her and the kids.
I do want to know that if anything would ever happen, that my kids have a way to get good treatment as I know that most all are refused here without money.. Sad :(
For me myself, if I would ever have health issues,, I'm just pretty much fecked, but have accepted that as a part of life.
When it's my time.. it's my time...
There are good hospitals in Cebu City and I know Manila also.. as long as you can afford them. :seasix:

Maybe I'm wrong.. but I think that the hospitals here are almost as good as in the USA...
But only for those that can afford it.. :( :yesnod:
For us out here on our remote Island, we live so far away... that if there was a life threatening emergency like a gunshot wound as example, and time was important... it wouldn't happen..
Boats, Bus, and even an ambulance could not get us there in time.
I'm just playing the odds here and hoping and guessing that's not going to happen
With something slower like a cancer or a tumor, possibly.. and most likely there would be time to even travel to the US for medical help if needed.

That's the thing, we're caught in a catch 22. The good health care is in Manila but we don't really want to live there.

Here is my thinking Johnny for what it is worth..
Not likely I will get shot, or even in a car crash way out here where I live. (seriously not much traffic out here)
Possibly snake Bit? :island14:
Other than stuffs like that.. there is always plenty of time to get to a hospital in the city's, and a good one..
And if you don't like the service or trust them for some reason, under most circumstances there would be time to travel back to the US for better? :island14:

I'm referring to the long term. When we get to be 80, the wife or I may not be able to travel easily. Back when I was stationed at Clark, we didn't have to worry about that. We were too interested in the latest place to hang out, have fun, and watch boot legged MTV....back on topic. :D

There's a complication CD of the Miami Vice soundtracks. It's available on eBay. That's back when music was good and you could understand the lyrics.

Anyone remember Laserdiscs? One day I was in the BX at Clark and found one by Don Johnson. I bought it. I still have it.

The big seller of the discs back then was Ken Cranes; I was getting monthly shipments from them.
I held off on DVD for the longest time; but the writing was on the wall for laserdisc... new movies weren't being ported over to laserdisc anymore.
There was a HiDef Laserdisc format, and a few prototypes were demonstrated in Japan; but Blu-Ray (and that other competing format ??? that lost out to Blu-Ray) already had a strong foothold.
Another problem for HD Laserdics was that Pioneer (who invented LD and pretty much owned the market for players and discs) wasn't associated with a film studio... they had to work really hard to get a film on LD. Blu-Ray was invented/owned by Sony; and they had instant access to films.
Once I jumped into DVD with a $900 Sony progressive player (this was before Blu-Ray came out)... I sold both LD players and discs on eBay over a 3 month period.
I've got 90% of the music on that show.
:iagree:
The licensed pop/rock star of the week was great, but I still enjoy Jan Hammer's scores the most.
Thankfully in the modern age you can easily find it all on youtube and rip it to whatever format you want.
This is my ring-tone for my wife:
Jan Hammer - PAYBACK - YouTube
And of course the best piece Hammer did:
Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme (Miami Vice) - YouTube
I jumped on that Woot deal a few years ago for the boxed set of the show in the faux white alligator skin box too. :D

I still have an LD player in our storage room along with 25-30 discs
It was beautiful picture and sound. Too bad, another orphan format

Hold on to that; you'll never be able to replace it.
The woman that played Gina, Sandra Santiago sung the national Anthem at a World Series and she had an outstanding voice.
