A massive explosion has hit China's northern port city of Tianjin, reportedly injuring scores of people.
According to Chinese state media, the explosion occurred when a shipment of explosives blew up at about 23:30 (16:30 GMT).
Pictures and video shared on social media showed flames lighting up the sky and damage to nearby buildings.
At least 50 people have been admitted to hospital, according to state news agency Xinhua.
It added that a fire started by the explosion was "under control" but said two firefighters were missing.
Several nearby tower blocks are without power, reported the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
Ms Yang, an eyewitness, told local media she was out shopping when "suddenly from behind there was a big fireball and explosion".
"At the time of the explosion the ground was shaking fiercely, nearby cars and buildings were shaking, a few buildings' glass all broke and everyone started to run," she said.
"Now all the residents are gathered in the street."
Tianjin is a major port and industrial area to the south-east of the Chinese capital, Beijing, and home to 7.5 million people.

Probably a WMD that China was about to ship to Iran. I am sure Obama will replace it for them.

Very sorry for the dead and injured. Considering the size of the explosion, losing only 17 lives is pretty amazing.

That's the haze of getting facts. The size of the multiple explosions and the amount of towers nearby that were in the blast and shock wave radius means there will be more, much more.

We'll never know the real numbers thanks to the Chinese media machine.

For now, they are admitting to 17 dead and 300 injured. I can't begin to imagine what the real numbers actually are.

TIANJIN, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Blasts that tore through a warehouse in Tianjin's port area in north China on Wednesday night have killed at least 50 people, 12 of whom were firemen. Another 701 people are still in hospital, many gravely ill.

Emergency personnel are continuing the search for the missing firefighters, but this is already one of the biggest losses of firemen in the line of duty for decades. Of the hundreds injured, most suffering from burns or broken bones, 71 are critically ill.

Two blasts occurred around 11:30 p.m. in Binhai New Area and were so strong that they were registered as seismic activity by the national earthquake center.

Reuters reported that according to a 2014 government assessment, the Ruihai facility was designed to store chemicals including butanone, an explosive industrial solvent, sodium cyanide and compressed natural gas.

The company also reportedly handles toluene diisocyanate, which is used in the production of flexible polyurethane foams.

Miracles are seized upon in catastrophes as they inject hope into overwhelming despair, as happened yesterday morning when a firefighter was found alive about 30 hours after the blasts in Tianjin.

Zhou Ti, 19, was found at 7.05am on Friday morning at the scene of the blasts, city government officials said at a news briefing.

Rescuers found Zhou about 20 metres from the blast point lying on the ground with his eyes closed, but slight movement in his throat indicated he was still alive. Three dead firefighters were found nearby.
