Don't know who coined the term, but threaded discussions go back to the newsgroup and bulletin board days, and generally look like this:

Though I have it disabled here, VBulletin does offer a threaded view option. Other popular sites (such as Reddit) continue to use it. FB has started to incorporate it too, keeping replies to a specific comment contained under that comment, rather than all replies falling equally under the OP thread.

On this type of forum layout, people tend to use the quote feature when replying to a specific comment to serve the same purpose. A straight list of comments would otherwise become very confusing to follow.
