View Full Version : Your Biggest Regret

Well maybe not your biggest, but one that sticks out in your head and you may think of from time to time.
Speaking of The Cars and Newton Mass.
I missed an epic pool party that my aunt had thrown on July 4th 1980 for her birthday, at her house. She was very rich and hired a luxury bus to transport all of us from Buffalo to Boston for the party. Ted Williams used to live in that house before they bought it, but they redid the whole thing in palatial style. their neighbors, Ric Okasik and his wife were there, and it was a typical late '70's early '80's party, wink, wink..
I, however, blew it off, to get laid out at the lake here at home. I did end up scoring, but always wondered how I would have done there.
I regret not going to this day, even though it was an epic weekend otherwise..
The stories that my cousins told of the party were amazing.
Oh well...

I wanted to join the USMC out of High school. I listened to my Dad and Godfather and pushed it off until I graduated college. Due to my eyes getting worse I failed the physical.

Not having a 2nd child. And at the same time, given what we've been given, I'm not sure version 2.0 could have improved upon version 1.0, so it may have sucked. In the end, I'm very grateful for what we were given. :yesnod:

The Military aspect of this is interesting. I don't necessarily regret not going into the Military but there are days I wonder what if.
I was a pretty big fuk up in the late 70's when I was in high school. My grades were terrible, and I didn't listen to anybody, parents included. Remember, in the late 70's it was kinda common to enlist if you were a meathead like I was. The good kids went to college, the dipshits like my friends and I either joined the Military or went to trade school.
I'm not bagging on Military people at all here. But I think the landscape has changed considerably in almost 40 years.

I really can't honestly say anything major. My wife and I just celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary last month and we have a wonderful daughter. 21 year career in the USAF in B-52 maintenance units, 16 years at Lockheed Martin, retired at 55 years old, got a new 2015 Z51 M7 3LT Coupe, life has been great.

You might've met your match in the 80s with an assignment to Clark Air Base, Philippines. :D
The place was and still is similar to the Wild West in that whatever you want to do is available. Let me say again, whatever you want to do. For example; I seen a guy arrive from McConnell (AFB, KS). He was Airman of the Quarter and Airman of the Year for the entire base. To say he was sharp and headed no where but up was an understatement. But as Clark did with many people, the base chewed him up and spit him out. He left busted to the lowest rank and a dishonorable discharge.
The reason: he just partied way too much.
I just remembered, his first name was Jeff too. :D

Yes it sure has. A lot of guys are just burned out from deployments. The politicians have cut the ranks and still kept deployments rolling. Also, people are getting out that normally would have stayed in and taking with them 10 or 15 years of knowledge. It's not as good a time as it once was.
I used to have several regrets. But recenty, I've come to learn that everything up to this point was leading me to something that would bring me true happiness and joy. So, no, I'm good. No regrets.

There you go. At 18 years old, I'd have dove into that scene with abandoned. At 53, I'd certainly approach things very differently. It took 35 years but I've calmed down a bit.

There was a high rate for discharges at Clark. I don't know the numbers but it had to be at least tied for first. At the time German, Holland, or Korean bases would be the others in the mix.
The place was amazing for a G-I. I never did see a place that corrupted so many across both enlisted and officer ranks as Clark.

Thomas, a lot of great guys got the boot. I knew some personally and also knew they were great workers but didn't have enough control of their off duty activities. However, there were all kinds of situations; some would get in trouble but stay clear enough to stay in, others would be close enough to retirement and punch out, and then the last category of just getting the boot.
So, who's to know. You might've just partied but been able to stay in.

It might sound cheezy, but I don't really have any big regrets. Sure, there is a whole list of coulda, woulda, shouldas but all of those things led me where I am and I'm pretty happy with that. Lessons learned the hard way tend to stick with you.
I don't know if you could call it a "regret" since I didn't have control over it, but I wish I hadn't gotten injured. I had planned on making the Navy a career and it was a tough adjustment when that option went away so quickly. The bright side is that I am back working with our servicemen, although now it's in the role of designing/building things that help them survive.
I try not to have any regrets. They weigh you down and stop you from moving forward.

My regret..
I went to visit my Father during his last days.. a few years back..
We had a really good night out, driving around, looking at our old home and neighborhood, and talking about old memories.. of growing up, and my childhood
We even drove around what use to be a field I played in as a kid, and later became an extension of the grave yard where he is buried in now.
Dad asked me to stay the morning I was leaving to go back home to my family in the islands..
He even said, please stay. this will be the last time that I see you son..
I just blew it off.. and told him I will see you again Dad
a few months later I got an email from my Sis he was gone.
I'd give anything... and I mean anything! to take back that day just to hug him and tell him how much I truly loved him..
And so much now I wished I had stayed longer.. :(
