Does a salesman working at a Mercedes/BMW/Audi dealership make more on a sale than a Kia salesman for example? Do higher end vehicles typically bring more commission or is commission a function or each individual dealership?

Depends on the franchised dealer. Being a Mercedes doesn't mean they get a better commission. Some dealers do commission based off of units, some are a percentage of the car. It all depend on their pay structure at that dealer.

It matters more how good the salesman is at holding gross profit rather than what brand of new car he is selling.

Commission is usually a percentage of gross profit. Typically a salesman makes more money on used cars, if they are bought well. When I was working at a Chevrolet dealer, I made more money on just about every used car I sold than I made on any new Corvette.

Four miles east of me, the Ford sellers get $125 per sale. Seven miles west, the same company sells German cars and those guys get a commission. Very different sellers. Ford guys wear polo shirts and khakis. Other place the sellers look like executives.

Jesus. That's fukin HORRIBLE.

Hell, that's what I wear to work a lot of days.
Golf shirt and casual stacks. What's wrong with that?

I work in an office and we have to wear collared shirts and no jeans. It beats the hell out of having to wear a suit. Even our "executive" offices in downtown Chicago are casual and most of the men wear similar clothes

The fun's over. From here on out, I'm Mr. Low Profile, just another douchebag with a job and three pairs of Dockers.

The Dockers post reminded me of this.

I know Kia was probably just your example, but most of their dealers are trending towards paying flats for each car. I'd never do that, that blows.

As far as high line vs non, 9 times out of 10 the high line is going to pay better.

Are you sure that $125 isn't their minimum commission? Or do they also get hourly pay on top of that? I don't know any salesman who would work for that as a flat commission on every car. You would have to sell 20 cars a month to be above the poverty line.

My buddy sold for Toyota...he was literally flat broke when he got the job..had to borrow clothes to wear. A year later he drove a near new tacoma and had a small house...the following year he drove a brand new tundra...a brand new 85k lexus...and bought a plot on the beach...this year hes building his dream home.

He was salesman of the month 15 times...runner up the othes....salesman of the year last year. Set a record..only missed it by 2 units the first year.

Now he is the head of finance and insurance...

And getting into real estate...

It happens in that business. When I worked at a Chevrolet dealer in '01, the top guy was a 19 year old kid, who was, frankly, a major asshole who was hated by just about everyone on the lot. He had been in jail before he worked there. I don't know what for. He made 100K that year. Since then, he's had some ups and downs in the business, but he is now the General Manager at a large Nissan dealership.

Most of the flat stores are salary plus.

That's the only way it would make sense. But like you, I would prefer a straight commission based on gross.
